Plot[]

The book starts at the beginning of the year as the people of the Green Hollows prepare for war against Gnag the Nameless. Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli Wingfeather with Oskar N. Reteep are heading to the Field of Finley for the chiefs of the Green Hollows to pledge allegiance to Kalmar. After this goes (mostly) smooth, Oskar and the Wingfeather children return to Chimney Hill. When they arrive home, Janner is surprised to learn that it's his thirteenth birthday. Janner is told to eat thirteen honeymuffins, which he does reluctantly, quickly discovering that there was zonkpowder in the thirteenth muffin, causing him to fall unconscious. Before he is completely unconscious, he sees Rudric giving him his sword before Guildmaster Clout carries him away on a horse.

When Janner wakes up, he finds that he was placed in a forest under a blanket next to a campfire. He finds a letter from Guildmaster Clout in his backpack, which tells him that he was "blindplopped" because it's a Durgan tradition, and that he needs to find his way back home without help. Clout also warns of the various creatures in the wilderness, such as toothy cows, cloven, and thorks; and tells him not to worry about ridgerunners because they probably won't kidnap him, and also that Janner's mother Nia gave Clout full permission to blindplop him.

After reading the letter, Janner finds that Baxter—one of Leeli's dogs—was somehow beside him. Janner finds a note from Leeli attached to Baxter's collar, which informs him that Leeli sent Baxter into the forest to keep Janner company, and that if Janner needs any help, then he can tell Baxter to "get Leeli", and Baxter will go back to Chimney Hill and lead Janner's family to him.
