The Throne Wardens is the fiftieth chapter of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness.

Summary[]

Nia tells the children that she was the queen and that they are all that's left of Anniera. Janner asks if Esben is dead, does it mean he is now the High King, but Nia tells him that in Anniera, it is the second-born who is king while the firstborn is the Throne Warden whose role is to protect the king. Janner remembers Artham's Journal, and Peet reveals that he is Artham P. Wingfeather and their uncle.

Janner asks Artham how he got bird talons in place of his arms, but he doesn't answer and instead begins panicking. Nia calms him and tells the children about what he was like before the Great War. Nia explains that when Anniera was attacked, Leeli had just been born, Janner was three, and Tink was two. Esben told Artham to get them to safety while he fought and retrieved something important.

Nia continues on explaining that they fled to meet Podo, who had a boat ready. She says that while she carried Leeli and held Janner's hand since he was able to walk and keep up, Tink was carried by her mother Wendolyn. She then tells the children that when they reached the riverbank, Artham tried to fight back the Fangs, but there were too many of them, and Wendolyn was killed. Nia says that as they boarded the boat, a Fang tried to snatch Leeli by the leg which is why Leeli now has a lame leg.

Artham had run back into the palace to find Esben as the rest of them fled, and Nia recalls seeing nothing but fire on both sides of the river. Podo says that they had asked the Maker to guide and protect them as they travelled across the Dark Sea of Darkness, and the Maker did help them by sending a storm that allowed them to escape undetected at reach Skree in just five days. Nia tells them that they took on the name 'Igiby' because Wendolyn's maiden name was Igiby.

Janner asks how Artham found them, but Nia tells him that they still don't know. Tink finally asks what is in the bundle that Podo had been carrying since they left the cottage, and Podo begins opening it.
