Synopsis[]
After a night of treachery, Janner and Kalmar encounter their biggest challenge yet, while Nia faces an impossible choice.
Plot[]
Nia, Podo, Oskar, and Leeli are waiting in the Strander burrow for Janner and Kalmar. Nia says if they aren't back by dark, she is going to look for them, but Podo says Leeli needs her mother, so he'll go instead. Oskar points out that Podo won't do any good with his arm in a sling, so he'll go. Janner and Kalmar are discovered by Ronchy and gives them food and directions to where their family should be hiding. The boys nearly get separated and Janner scolds Kalmar for running away from him. He reminds Kalmar that he needs to stay with him because they are the Throne Warden and High King. Kalmar says he doesn't want to be king and he runs off again.
Annoyed with his brother, Janner decides to find his way to the Strander burrow himself. Janner makes his way to what he believes is Tilling Street. He reaches a dead end and discovers several hags and ragmen were watching him. He runs away as the hags and ragmen begin chasing him. He is eventually caught and bound and the hags and ragmen take him to a place called the Fork! Factory!. Janner is traded to a man called the Overseer for a girl named Lily Bolpin. At the Roundish Widow, Oskar interrogates Ronchy and learns that Ronchy had given the boys directions to the burrow. Oskar reveals the boys never arrived and he goes to seek help from someone else.
He finds Gammon and informs him that the boys are missing. Gammon explains that kids in Dugtown tend to go missing, so there is little chance he can find the boys. He tells Oskar to get the rest of the family out of Dugtown as soon as possible, otherwise he might lose them all. Janner is forced to work at the paring station, and over at the Strander burrow, the family are forced to leave without the boys after Maraly warns them that the Stranders put a bounty on their heads. Kalmar heads to the East Bend to rule it as its chief, but the Stranders aren't happy that he is back and Claxton grabs Kalmar and takes back his pone. Artham is locked up in the Phoob Islands and he watches as a man named Derver Sleets is melded with a lizard and becomes a Green Fang named Skag.
