I had no idea (and neither did he) that "The Places Beyond the Maps" would be a novella that's almost as long as the first Wingfeather book. I marveled at Doug's towering prose, his deft use of archaic words, and his vast imagination, sensing as I read that he was exploring not just Aerwiar but some deep and broken part of his own heart.

The Places Beyond the Maps is the seventh and final short story from Wingfeather Tales. It was written by Douglas Kaine McKelvey and edited by Andrew Peterson.

Summary[]

it starts two weeks before the first chapter, of the first book, On the Edge of The Dark Sea Of Darkness, in torrborro. a family lost their daughter to the black carriage, and the father is the main character, he has no name and is only referred to as "The Man" and his wife is referred to as "The Man's Wife," it tells how, when the Fangs came, he tried to stay calm and hope that the fangs who came to their house, to (most likely take the girl) were only gonna demand something disgusting to drink and leave, but his wife had hidden a dagger earlier for emergency purposes and was ready to use it, The Man stopped her from trying to kill (or wound) the fangs to save save their daughter, (who was still in bed listening to what was happening downstairs) thinking that making them angry would deffinetly make them take The daughter and maybe kill them too, The fangs end up taking The daughter, wounding the parents, and leaving, a little while later The Man regrets stopping his wife from trying to hurt the fangs because he realized that, that would have been a better option then to let them leave, this puts him in a shame like state, (almost like Artham P. Wingfeathers shame) and their daughter, (now gone) seemed to be the Life, and Joy, of the family, without her, the two parents seemed to be empty, and lifeless, they didn't talk to each other for days, and The Man Still recovering from his wound caused by the fangs, laying in his own daughter's bed, found a baby silk tricorn stuffed animal, it had once belonged to his daughter, and he kept it, Remembering that he had told her stories about the Magnificent tricorn and had said that they were true, even though he could hardly beleive them himself, in the past he had promised his wife that "I will give her a childhood," because the fangs and Gang The Nameless had already invaded, He wanted her to live life the happiest way she could, until she would finally have to come to the fact that the world was a "broken thing" but now that she was gone, he was on the verge of giving up. then a thought came to him, that His daughter had only been taken not killed, (possibly) and maybe there was a chance he could still rescue her, for she was still some where in the world, and he was willing to travel "Beyond the maps." to find her, he dresses up in black and gets ready to leave (with the silk tricorn in his pocket as now his most valuable possession) on his way to the door he encounters his wife, who seems "lifeless, Humorless and full of sorrow" he tells her that he will go find her and bring her back, she tells him to "Swear it then." and when he says that his word is his oath she says "Your words have been weak, Swear it now, Swear it by the Makers hand." he does so and vows not to come back until he has shown up with her back. and if she is dead he promises not to come back until he brings his daughter Justice. He leaves the house not looking back.

soon he travels Torrborro and goes to a tavern. he stays there for a few days and (is also equipped with a sword) with his mind determined to bring his beloved daughter back. soon The very fangs who took his daughter come into the tavern. Previously he noticed that one of the fangs in his house had boots. and the fang that walked in the tavern had boots too. along with a fat fang, (of whom had also been at his house) they were arguing with each other about drinks. unaware that the man was with them. the fang with boots (named Beadsy.) says that he would prefer "a pot of ol. Kiffy." more than Eeel squeeze, (both beverages,) after their argument, the fangs leave, and the man follows, he ends up trapping the fangs. on a bridge, and kills a few and chops off Beadsy's tail. and threatens to kill him, if he doesn't tell where he took his daughter. Beadsy claims that his daughter was one of the few children they randomly decided to kill. instead of use her. he claims that they threw her in The Mighty River Blapp. along with other children, and that, The Man was too late. his daughter was dead.

Overwhelmed with shame, and pain. he lets the fang live, and his determination was gone. his daughter was dead. and "His Oath Was Broken" The man then turned his attention and life purpose South. he simply didn't care of Returning to his wife. he would just keep walking south and would die in the unknown places. he had no purpose anymore, and couldn't bring his daughter back. for she was gone. "The man's Thoughts turned Evermore inward"
