Official synopsis[]
Bearded warriors. Tasty fruits. And the deadly secret of Chimney Hill.
The kingdom of Anniera has fallen, and the royal family is on the run. Relentlessly pursued by the Fang armies of Gnag the Nameless, Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollows—a land of tasty fruits that's fiercely guarded by warriors feared even by the Fangs of Dang.
But a new problem threatens their hoped-for peace: Janner's younger brother, Kalmar—heir to the throne of Anniera—has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows, he looks like a monster. But Janner knows better. His brother isn't as scary as he looks. He's perfectly harmless.
Or is he?

Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli Wingfeather, along with their mother Nia, grandfather Podo Helmer, and friend Oskar N. Reteep are living on a ship called the Enramere, fleeing Kimera and the Ice Prairies with the help of Gammon Felda and his men. They have their course set for the Green Hollows, which seems to be the only place safe from Gnag the Nameless and his army of Fangs. Silence wakes Janner Wingfeather as he notes his brother's absence and decides to look for him on the ship. When getting out of bed, he smells smoke, which worried him and caused him to hurry. After having a short talk with Oskar, he heads to the deck where he finds everyone gathered at the railing, watching. He finds out that Anniera is still burning after nine long years. Janner now understands that Anniera was a real place, and feels a stab of homesickness for Glipwood. Not long after, they spot the Green Hollows on the horizon and set sail for it. Not long after the Green Hollows was within a reasonable distance, the Enramere was being pummeled by boulders from Hollish ships until Nia intervened, to which Leeli sang and played a whistleharp tune known as The Boatwright's Daughter. The Hollowsfolk on the ship replied by singing the song with her. Nia was then assured that they would give them, at the least, a queen's welcome.
However, when exiting the ship, Kalmar is seized by various Hollowsfolk including Nibbick Bunge, after someone shouting and pointing. He's taken to jail until the next day. Janner and his family go to a nearby restaurant, settling down in the upper floor. The next day at the counsel in the Keep of Ban Rona, after arguments that Kalmar is safe and sane as ever, Nia declares Turalay, though she receives many protests against this. Later, after Kalmar's pardon due to Turalay, they go to the same restaurant as the night before. This time however, it's empty because the Hollowsfolk heard that Kalmar might be eating there. Nia offers to do various types of manual labor for her in compensation for her empty restaurant, such as washing dishes.
