Synopsis[]
The family takes shelter at Anklejelly Manor, but will they survive a Fang army attack?
Summary[]
Helping Nugget[]
Peet rushes into his home and places Nugget by a window. He lights a candle and rummages through a crate for a flask. He pours some water from the flask into Nugget's mouth, and he watches with awe as a green light shines onto him.
Fleeing to Anklejelly Manor[]
A Fang runs through Glipwood Forest, searching for the Igibys. She eventually finds their wagon completely abandoned near a trail. She begins howling, calling for the other Fangs.
Podo leads the family as they make their way through the forest. They stop to rest and the children begin asking where they are going, and Podo explains to them that they will be stopping at Dugtown to meet someone who can get them to the Ice Prairies, and Janner notes how Fangs slow down in the cold. Tink asks if they can light a lantern, but Podo tells them that the fire would draw cave blats, toothy cows and horned hounds to their location, so they shouldn't, which is why they will need to lie low in a cave or a moonberry thicket during daylight and only move at night. Janner points out that Anklejelly Manor isn't very far, so they could hide there. Podo says that it could work, and the family begin making their way to Anklejelly Manor.
Fighting at Anklejelly[]
As the family reach Anklejelly Manor, they hear shrieking behind them. Turning around, they see a Fang running towards them, who suddenly jumps a great height and lands on Podo, attacking him and causing him the let go of his sword, which Janner picks up and then tries to run over and help Podo, but more Fangs begin to appear. One Fang approaches Janner slowly, hissing at him as the boy points the blade at her. Nia tells Janner to back up slowly, and Janner obeys. He suddenly trips and falls backwards, accidentally letting go of the sword, and the Fang growls at him right before being squashed by a statue pushed by Nia. Podo punches the Fang who attacked him and Janner quickly throws the blade over to Podo, which he then uses to kill the Fang. Podo orders the family to get into Anklejelly Manor as two more Fangs appear. One of the Fangs trips Podo, and the two Fangs prepare to kill him, but they suddenly hear a battle cry and they see a large shape coming towards them. They discover it to be Peet riding Nugget, who somehow grew to an enormous size. The Fangs are killed by the duo and Podo nods respectfully to Peet. Turning around, Podo is shocked to see Nugget, who proceeds to lick the old man. Leeli runs over to Nugget and hugs him as Nia asks how Nugget became so big. Before Peet can explain how, they are suddenly interrupted by an army of Fangs marching on Anklejelly. Peet orders the family to run, which Podo tells him that he is already taking care of it, and the family run into the mansion. Leeli, however, looks to Peet and asks if he is coming, but Peet tells her that he will hold the Fangs at bay. Not wanting Peet to be on his own, Leeli tells Nugget to take care of him, and Nugget obeys.
Hiding in Anklejelly[]
The family enter the weapons room and seal themselves in. Meanwhile outside, Peet and Nugget ready themselves as the Fang army approach. Peet waits for the army to reach the gate, and right when they do, Nugget jumps over the gate with Peet jumping from his back, and the two begin attacking the Fangs. Leeli hears Nugget howling, and she is joyful to hear him succeeding at fighting the Fangs, and Podo says that Nugget will thin the Fangs' ranks before, but he trails off as Nia glares at him. Leeli asks before what, and Podo answers by saying before the Fangs know what hit them. Three Fangs enter Anklejelly Manor, with one of them being Slarb, who tells the other two Fangs that the Igibys are his. The Fangs make their way to the ruined staircase that leads to the basement, and they jump down and enter the hallway to the weapons room. Reaching the door, they discover it to be locked, so Slarb demands for the other two Fangs to open it. Outside, Peet and Nugget continue fighting the Fangs, but are eventually forced to fall back as more and more Fangs arrive. Inside Anklejelly, the family hear something banging on the door. Janner guesses that the Fangs have a troll, but Podo says that they'd smell it and that the Fangs are using a battering ram. They notice the wall around the door beginning to crack, and Podo and Janner rush to hold the door closed. Janner accidentally knocks the lantern over, and Podo tells him to be careful, for they don't want to set fire to anything, and Janner then says maybe they do. He tells Podo that if they set fire to the old staircase, it will bring every Toothy Cow and Horned Hound in Glipwood Forest. Podo agrees, and he asks for Tink to bring him one of the shields. After Tink passes him a shield, Podo grabs a spear and explains that once he and Janner are through the door, nothing else is to come in. He then tells everyone to arm themselves, and Janner grabs the "Esben Wingfeather" sword. Nia quickly kisses Janner as he and Podo prepare to leave the room.
Lighting a fire[]
The Fangs continue to slam the battering ram into the door. Podo suddenly opens the door and kills the nearest Fangs as Janner follows him. Several Fangs try to attack Podo, but they are unable to get passed his shield, and Podo swiftly kills them. Seeing a Fang crawling on the roof of the hallway, Podo tries to stab her, but the Fang dodges his attacks and makes her way towards Janner. Podo alerts Janner of the Fang, and just as the Fang attempts to pounce at Janner, he quickly kills her. Podo and Janner near the staircase, killing more Fangs along the way, and Slarb orders the Fangs to seize the two. Janner tosses the lantern to the staircase, causing it to catch fire, and the Fangs decide to escape, leaving Slarb with Podo and Janner. Slarb begins threatening Podo, and the latter tells Janner to return to the others while he fights Slarb. The Fang lunges at Podo while dodging his spear and attacks him, but Podo quickly pushes him back with his shield. Slarb lunges at him again and repeatedly slashes at Podo's shield. Podo, weakened, drops his spear as Slarb begins mocking him and monologuing about how the Jewels of Anniera will be his. Podo instantly grabs the spear and stabs Slarb. He then lifts Slarb up and throws the Fang into the fire. Getting up from the ground, Podo makes his way back to the weapons room.
Sing the song for your Podo[]
Nia and the children anxiously sit together as they continue to hear the sounds of fighting outside. They eventually hear banging on the door, and then they hear Podo's voice demanding for them to let him in. Janner unlatches the door and allows Podo to enter the room before locking the door again. Nia asks Podo if he is hurt, and Podo tells her that he just needs to catch his breath. He asks Tink to hand him some water, and as he tries to take the bottle from Tink, he suddenly collapses. Nia rushes to Podo and tells Leeli to grab her pack. Janner runs over to Podo and notices the wound the latter received from Gnorm was bleeding severely. Nia places a cloth over Podo's wound and pleads for Podo to stay with them. Podo weakly requests for Nia to sing him a song, and Nia sombrely begins singing "My Love Has Gone Across the Sea". Leeli eventually joins her by playing her whistleharp, and the family cry as they sit around a dying Podo. As Nia sings, Peet and Nugget continue fighting the Fang army. Peet looks back at the mansion and can overhear Nia's singing and Leeli's playing. He then looks back at the Fangs, closes his eyes, and reopens them while saying "Courage, Artham". Artham looks to Nugget and says that if it's the end, they better make it good. They suddenly hear some mooing, and they turn to see a Toothy Cow ramming into a Fang. They then see a pack of Horned Hounds attacking several Fangs. One Horned Hound, who appears to be the leader of the pack of Hounds, stands atop a large root. Nugget begins growling at the Hound, but eventually stops when the Hound starts howling, and Nugget howls along with it as many more Toothy Cows and Horned Hounds arrive and slaughter the Fangs.
The battle is over[]
Janner wakes up to see Nia cradling Podo's head in her lap. Janner asks Nia if Podo is dead, and she tells him "Not yet. But...soon". They suddenly hear rumbling and feel the room shaking, which causes Tink and Leeli to awaken. They turn to see the roof cracking and they eventually see Nugget break into the room with Artham behind him. Leeli runs to Nugget and hugs him as he licks her face joyfully. Artham tells the family that the Fangs are all gone, and he is happy to see the family all safe, but Nia tells him that not all of them are okay. Artham approaches Podo with a flask in his hand, and he releases a drop of water from the flask onto Podo's wound. Nia asks him what the water is, and Artham tells her that it is water from the First Well. Janner asks Nia what the First Well is, and she explains to him that it is the lifeblood of Aerwiar and the first well in the world that has been lost for ages. Before she can ask Artham how he found it, Tink tells Artham to give Podo more of the water, but Artham says that he gave too much of the water to Nugget and that they don't need a giant Podo walking around, at least he certainly doesn't. Podo slowly gets up, and the children and Nia embrace him. Nia then remarks at how the sun is up and they're all still together. Podo then says that his sailor's nose smells a storm coming, and that they'll need to make it to Dugtown before the Fangs can regroup, but Nia tells him that it is two days on foot and that the children will need food and rest. Podo explains that they clearly can't stay at Anklejelly and that there is nowhere else to go between the manor and Dugtown. Leeli then mentions that there is one place, and she looks at Artham.
The Jewels of Anniera[]
The family end up staying at Artham's treehouse, however, Podo refuses to go inside. Leeli comes outside and pleads for Podo to join them inside, but he refuses, so Leeli asks him to at least come in for a bowl of Flabbit stew. Podo tells her that he will not have any of Artham's cooking, so Leeli tells him that she helped make it, which Podo then says that he guesses he'll just have the parts Leeli made. Leeli then says that she helped with all of it, so Podo tells her that he'll have part of all of it. Inside, as the family eats, Janner asks Nia if she really has the Jewels of Anniera, and if so, where are they. Podo tells Janner that the correct question is "what are they?" as Nia grabs three bundles. She explained to the kids that Gnag the Nameless has been after the Jewels since the war reached the Shining Isle, and Leeli asks why Gnag wants the Jewels. Nia answers her by saying that Gnag believes the Jewels have a hidden power, and Tink then asks why Nia has the Jewels if they aren't even from Anniera. Podo tells him that not all of them are Annieran, and Nia explains that Podo is from Glipwood, but she was born in the Green Hollows, and when she married Esben, they made their home in Anniera, which was where the children were born. She then tells the children that when war came and Esben died, they fled to Glipwood to protect the Jewels. Janner asks again where are the Jewels, and after being corrected by Podo again, he asks what are they. Artham tells the children that they are the Jewels of Anniera. Nia explains to the kids that Esben was the High King of the Shining Isle, she was the queen, and that the kids are all that's left of Anniera. Artham and Podo both kneel at the children as Janner asks if it means he is the High King, but Podo then tells him that is not how it works in Anniera. Nia explains to him that the kingship is passed over the eldest and that the second-born wears the crown, and Tink asks if it means he is the High King, which Nia tells him yes. She then tells Janner that the eldest is instead the Throne Warden, whose role is protector of the High King. Janner asks if he is supposed to spend his whole life keeping Tink out of trouble, and Tink playfully orders Janner to get him more stew. Nia tells Janner that there were days in which Esben wished he were the Throne Warden and not the High King, and Janner then remembers the book that had "Artham Wingfeather" written in it, and the kids realise that Artham is their uncle. Nia explains how Artham fought bravely at Esben's side so the Jewels wouldn't fall into Fang hands and that without Artham's sacrifice, Gnag would have captured their whole family. Nia then tells the kids that Esben had prepared gifts weeks before he died, and she first hands one of the bundles to Janner, who opens the bundle to find a book which Nia says is one of the First Books, said to give wisdom to the wise. Nia hands another bundle to Tink, who finds Esben's sketchbook inside, which has drawings of Anniera. Nia then gives Leeli the last bundle, and inside, Leeli finds a silver whistleharp, and Nia tells her that it belonged to the children's great-grandmother Madia, High Queen of Anniera, and that melodies played on the harp are said to have the power to protect Anniera. Leeli points out that it didn't stop the Fangs, and Nia replies saying that they had no Song Maiden to play it. She then tells Leeli that she is the Song Maiden of the Shining Isle. Podo then says "And let the Fangs beware".
A letter from home[]
As Janner reads the First Book, Nia approaches him and tells him that he reminds her of Esben. Janner responds by saying that Esben was king while he is just a Throne Warden. Nia explains to Janner that being a Throne Warden is a sacred call and that Janner is a Wingfeather. She then hands Janner a letter, saying it is one last gift from Esben. Janner unfolds the letter and reads it as Nia kisses him and walks off. The letter from Esben says: "Dearest Janner, you've royal blood in your veins, no matter what your name or place in this world. The Maker made you Throne Warden to your little brother, and I wouldn't wish anyone but you to keep him safe. There are rumours of war. Should Anniera fall, should I fall, remember your homeland. Ancient secrets lie beneath these stones and cities. We mustn't let them fall to evil. One day when you're alone, unsure, doubting yourself, you'll need these words. Remember this: You are Annieran. Your father is a king. You are his son. This is your land, and nothing can change that. Nothing. Know when you read this that your father loves you like no other. Your papa."
In a post-credits scene, we see a factory with a furnace burning and chains hanging from the roof. We then see a girl sorting weapons. As she does so, she turns around and we see that she is Sara Cobbler.
