Synopsis[]
Janner goes to meet a friend, but discovers something terrible and the family takes action.
Summary[]
The warning on the map[]
In the children's room at the Igiby Cottage, Janner is making a necklace for Sara that also acts as a Fang-repellant because of the crushed up bullyblossoms in it. When the necklace breaks, Leeli decides to help Janner. As she goes to grab something to help, Tink enters the room and tells Janner to concentrate on the map. When Janner sees the map, he glares at Tink, who says that he will take it back to Books and Crannies, but wants to know what Janner thinks the map leads to. Janner tells him that the map is none of their business because it isn't theirs, so Tink tells Janner that he is just borrowing the map like how Janner has borrowed books from Books and Crannies. Tink then shows Janner an arrow mark on the map, and he tells him that he saw the same mark on a barrel behind Ferinia's Flower Shop. He then shows Janner a warning written on the back of the map that reads: "Be you friend or be you foe, beware to all who follow. For in the catacombs below, is hidden in the hollow. A way that leads to pain and woe, sadness, grief, and sorrow. The hungry ghost of Brimney Stupe, awaits your bones to swallow." Just then, Leeli reenters the room with a pendant, which she gives to Janner and explains to him that he can put the bullyblossoms inside it.
Heading to Books and Crannies[]
As the children head to Books and Crannies to return the books they borrowed, Tink keeps on asking Janner why they can't keep the map for a bit longer. When they make it into town, they stop outside Ferinia's Flower Shop and Janner gives Tink the books and the map and pleads with him to make sure all of the things are returned. When Tink leaves, Leeli asks Janner what he'll say when he gives Sara the necklace. Janner tells her what he'll say, unaware that Sara had just come out of the flower shop to water the flowers on the porch, and asks Leeli if what he just said sounded too silly. Leeli teasingly tells him to ask Sara, who heard what Janner said. Janner nervously gives Sara the necklace, and she thanks him for it and tells him that she loves it. Janner asks Sara if she'd like to come with them to Books and Crannies, but Sara tells him that she has to work. Before Janner and Leeli leave, Sara asks Janner if he has ever seen a silver moonbloom, a flower as big as Leeli that only opens once every seven years, and she explains to him that she saw one that was about to open on the cliff wall. She asks Janner if he'd like to meet her there at dawn to see it. Janner agrees, and when the children say goodbye, Slarb watches from behind some flowers as Janner and Leeli leave.
A secret poster[]
Over at Books and Crannies, Tink is trying to put the map back, but as he does so, Oskar finds him and believes he is back for more books about itches. Oskar eventually leaves to look for books that he thinks Tink would find useful, and right when he's gone, Zouzab arrives to ask Tink if he has any fruit for him. Tink lies to him and tells him that he hid a plumyum somewhere in the shop. Zouzab leaves to go look for the plumyum, and Tink returns to putting the map back. When he opens the secret compartment, he finds something else in it. He takes it out and sees that it is a poster of a Fang-fighter called the Florid Sword. Tink quickly hides the poster in his pocket just as Oskar returns with a book titled "Appointments With Ointments: Reflections of a Rashologist". Tink takes the book and says that he should go find Janner and Leeli, and he leaves Books and Crannies with both the map still and the poster now in his possession. As he goes out the door, he accidentally bumps into Janner, and the two boys topple over.
The Florid Sword[]
Back at the Igiby Cottage, Janner is outside scooping manure from the barn. Tink runs over to show the poster he found to Janner, who is angry when he realises that Tink still hadn't put the map back, but he becomes curious when Tink points out that the same symbol that was on the map was also on the poster. Tink begins explaining that the symbol proves that Anklejelly Manor is a Fang-fighter hideout and that if they go, they can join the Florid Sword's group of Fang-fighters. Janner tells Tink that he has to put the map back, because if Oskar finds out it is missing, then he might think it was Janner's fault. Tink says that maybe he'll just go without Janner and join the Fang-fighters himself. Janner attempts to snatch the map away from Tink, but Tink quickly runs off.
New Orders[]
In the middle of the night, the Black Carriage is preparing to set off. Slarb and another Fang load a couple of boxes into the Carriage as Vop gives them their "snatchy list". Slarb studies the list and notices that some of the names are the names of children. Vop explains to him that it is because of their new orders, and that they are to take one child per town to start with. Slarb and the other Fang board the Carriage, and they set out to carry out their orders.
At the Igiby Cottage, Janner tells Podo and Nia that he was invited by Sara to join her at the bridge at dawn to see the silver moonbloom and he asks if he is allowed to go. Nia is at first reluctant, but when Podo assures her that it will be fine, she says yes.
The Black Carriage is riding along a path. When Slarb spots a house, he orders the driver to stop. The other Fang tells Slarb that the house isn't on their snatchy list, but Slarb just laughs and say that it is now.
At dawn, Janner is waiting for Sara at the bridge. When he hears someone coming, he turns to see Slarb standing at the other end of the bridge. He looks away as Slarb asks him if he's waiting for someone. Janner replies that he is just waiting for a friend, and Slarb then tells him that he'll be waiting a long time, because his friend was taken by the Black Carriage. He shows him the pendant and walks off laughing as Janner cries.
Janner runs home and tells Nia and Podo that Sara was taken by the Black Carriage. They are shocked to hear this since the Black Carriage had never taken children from Glipwood before. Nia hugs Janner and suggests that Mayor Blaggus might be able to do something. She tells Podo to get their horse Danny hitched up while she grabs something to barter. Podo tells Janner to have a stout heart before hugging him. As Podo and Nia leave, Nia tells Janner to watch Tink and Leeli while they're out.
Going to Anklejelly[]
Furious and upset with the Fangs, Janner decides to head to Anklejelly Manor to find the Florid Sword. He tells Tink to grab some supplies because they need to find the Florid Sword. Leeli overhears this and asks what is going on. Janner tells her to stay home and keep the doors locked until he and Tink get back. He then explains to Tink and Leeli that the Fangs took Sara and the Florid Sword is the only one who can get her back. Tink and Leeli are shocked to hear that the Fangs took a kid from Glipwood. Janner orders Nugget to stay and guard Leeli, but Leeli says that she is coming to Anklejelly Manor too, since Sara was her friend as well.
Podo and Nia barge into Mayor Blaggus' office and tell him that the Fangs took Sara. Mayor Blaggus tells them to keep it down and explains to them that Sara's parents already told him. He says that the best thing to do is to forget that the girl ever existed to prevent more trouble for the town.
The children enter Glipwood Forest. Just then they hear some rustling in the bushes, and out comes a squeeblin. Leeli finds it cute, but Janner tells her that nothing in the forest is "just cute". They watch as the squeeblin captures a bird with its teeth and devours it. Janner recalls how Pembrick's Creaturepedia said that squeeblins are prone to melancholy. Leeli suggests that she plays a sad song with her whistleharp. When the squeeblin sees the children, it begins charging towards them. Leeli begins playing a sad song, which causes the squeeblin to cry and run off. The children continue on to Anklejelly Manor, but they suddenly hear howling in the distance. Janner says it is a horned hound and that it has no weakness, so the children start running, unaware that they're being followed by Peet.
Seek and find[]
Back at Mayor Blaggus' office, the mayor explains to Podo and Nia that if the Fangs aren't messing with them, then they shouldn't mess with the Fangs. Podo is beginning to get annoyed, and he starts threatening Mayor Blaggus, but Nia tells him to calm down. She gives the mayor a ring and tells him to give it to Gnorm and ask for him to return Sara, but the mayor refuses to put his sons at risk by angering the Fangs. Nia then tells him to keep it to bribe the Fangs when the Black Carriage comes to collect his sons. She asks him where the Fangs took Sara, but Mayor Blaggus tells them that he doesn't know. Outside, Slarb is walking by and he overhears the conversation. Curious, he eavesdrops on them. The mayor explains that Sara was only taken because of someone else's selfishness and that Gnag the Nameless is after one thing that no one is giving him. Podo asks what Gnag is after, and Mayor Blaggus tells him that he is looking for the Jewels of Anniera. Nia says that the Jewels of Anniera are only a legend, and Slarb begins growing suspicious of Nia and Podo. He decides to search their house for any jewels.
Anklejelly Manor[]
The children arrive at Anklejelly Manor. They make their way across the yard to the front door, which topples down when they try opening it, and as they enter, they once again hear the horned hounds in the distance. They search the manor for any secret passageways, hoping to find the Florid Sword and his Fang-fighters. Leeli finds the entrance to a basement, and she calls Janner and Tink over. They notice that the stairs to the basement are destroyed, and Janner guesses that the hideout must be down there. The horned hounds howl once more, and Janner quickly jumps down and tells Leeli to come down next and he'll catch her. When Leeli jumps down, Tink hesitates, but quickly jumps when two horned hounds appear at the doorway. The hounds bark at the children from the top of the broken stairway, but they leave after Janner throws a rock at them. The children find a hallway and go into it.
Searching for jewels[]
At the Igiby Cottage, Slarb trashes the place while looking for any jewels. As he does so, Nugget comes in and barks at him, but Slarb just kicks the dog into a closet. Frustrated, the Fang bashes Nia's bed and unintentionally reveals a secret compartment. Inside it is a small canister containing four Annieran jewels. Slarb remarks at how General Khrak will promote him for finding the jewels, and he then leaves.
Back at Anklejelly Manor, the kids light a candle and travel through the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, they find a locked door with around 90 small buttons on it. Janner checks the map to see if there is a clue to opening the door. He holds the candle up to the map, and realises that there are holes in the map that are in the shape of a 'W' with four extra holes at the corners. Leeli presses each button and the door unlocks. The children head inside a small room and find several weapons stashed inside. The three of them examine the weapons, and Janner finds a sword with "Esben Wingfeather" written on it. They suddenly hear a noise coming from the other end of the tunnel, and they go investigate. They at first don't find anything, and Janner guesses that it might've been the wind banging on something, but Tink fears that it was the ghost of Brimney Stupe. Janner suggests that they find a way out, but the two horned hounds from earlier suddenly come into the light and growl at the children. The Igiby children quickly run back through the tunnel with the horned hounds chasing after them. The three children quickly run into the room with all the weapons and they lock the door as the Horned Hounds furiously try to smash it open.
