The Carriage comes, the Carriage Black
By shadowed steed with shadowed tack
And shadowed driver driving” - ―The Carriage Black[2]
The Carriage Comes, the Carriage Black is the first chapter of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness.
Summary[]
Janner Igiby struggles to fall asleep as he hears the Black Carriage approaching. The haunting nursery rhyme chants itself in his head as he listens to the rattling of the dark carriage outside.
He remembers when the previous week, his mother was crying about a girl his age named Sara Cobbler who was taken from her home in Torrboro. He imagines what must have happened as she was taken.
He prays that the Carriage will pass his house, that it will not come for him. When the sounds of the Black Carriage fade off into the distance, he at last falls asleep.
