Oskar Noss Reteep, Appreciator of the Neat, the Strange, and/or the Yummy, was the proprietor of Books and Crannies. On specific days of the week, Janner Igiby would come to Books and Crannies to do work for Oskar as an apprentice.

History[]

Season 1[]

Leeli & The Sea Dragon Song[]

During Dragon Day, Oskar was telling Janner about sea dragon songs as he got some books ready to put by the window of Books and Crannies so that people could buy some books about sea dragons.

A Mysterious Map[]

When Janner and Tink came to Books and Crannies to help Oskar unload a new shipment of books, he was telling Janner about where he'd find the books. Later on, when he saw Tink holding a book titled "The Art of Itching", he came to believe that Tink had a rash and was too embarrassed to admit it, so he began looking for books about itches in the hopes of helping Tink.

The Catacombs Below[]

When Tink came to Books and Crannies to return some books and the map he had taken without asking, Oskar found him and thought that he was after more books about itches. He went and grabbed a book titled "Appointments With Ointments: Reflections of a Rashologist" and he gave it to Tink.

Escape to Peet's Castle[]

When Nia Igiby arrived at Books and Crannies and asked Oskar if he had seen the children, Oskar told her that the kids weren't with him. He then asked Nia if the children were aware of Anklejelly Manor, and he explained to her that he thinks Tink might've found his extra map to Anklejelly as well as a poster of the Florid Sword. Oskar and Nia then headed to Anklejelly Manor to look for the kids. When they got there, all they found was Tink's lighter. Oskar comforted Nia when she found a sword with the name "Esben Wingfeather" written on it. Before they left Anklejelly Manor, they found one of Peet the Sock Man's socks. Nia dropped Oskar off in town and Oskar tried to reassure Nia that the kids are most likely somewhere safe. Later on when the Igiby Cottage was being attacked by the Fangs, Oskar ran over and explained to Podo and the children that Gnorm ordered the Fangs to arrest them. Podo told Oskar to take the kids to safety, and Oskar obeyed.

Fruit for Zouzab[]

Oskar was hiding the children at Ferinia's Flower Shop. Despite wanting to keep them hidden until he could smuggle them out of Glipwood, he was eventually convinced to go into Glipwood Jail himself to rescue Nia and Podo. He later on headed to his shop to prepare his wagon, with Zouzab watching him suspiciously. At some point in between then and when it was dark, he had a scuffle with Zouzab, who was trying to stop Oskar from making it to the wagon, and their scuffle lead to Zouzab stabbing him. The Igibys eventually found him and Podo sent Tink to fetch the Shoosters. Oskar explained to the family that they needed to flee while they still could, because Zouzab had sent a message to Fort Lamendron and that a whole garrison of Fangs was coming. When the Shoosters arrived, they begun tending to Oskar's wound as Oskar said goodbye to the Igibys and reassured Janner that he was likely to heal.

Season 2[]

Flight of the Wingfeathers[]

Oskar crawled out of a hidden room in The Only Inn to retrieve the book Edible Worms of Skree. He collapsed to the floor after he grabbed it and was found by Joe who helped him up. After Joe noted how Glipwood was overrun with Fangs, Oskar told him about the Jewels of Anniera. Joe helped Oskar back into his room and concealed the entrance. Oskar overheard Zouzab informing the Shoosters that the Fangs wish to see them and Oskar then heard Addie scream and watched through a pipe Joe and Addie get taken by the Black Carriage. When General Khrak arrived in Glipwood, Oskar watched him talk to Zouzab and then reveal he brought a couple of trolls. Oskar rode a gambloat into Glipwood Forest to warn the Wingfeathers of the trolls.

When Nia saw Oskar's wound, she healed it with the First Well water and Oskar and the family fled deeper into the forest with the Fangs close behind. They came to a gully and began to cross it, but when the children and Nugget fell through the ground and into a den, Oskar helped Nia drag a log into one of the holes so the children could climb out. Oskar and the family eventually reached the River Blapp and stopped to rest. Oskar told them about Miller's Bridge and Fingap Falls, but Podo refused to go there. Oskar asked Kalmar what he thought and Leeli answered for Kalmar when he was too nervous, saying Miller's Bridge seemed like the best option. When they reached Fingap Falls however, they discovered there was no bridge.

Fingap Falls[]

When they were cornered, Oskar distracted the trolls by luring them closer to the river. When the trolls were bombarded by daggerfish, Oskar rejoined the others and when Kalmar discovered steps, Oskar guessed the steps could lead to Miller's Bridge. He and the family followed the steps and soon discovered that he was right. After Nia and the children jumped across a gap in the bridge formed by a boulder, Oskar got across the gap by riding Nugget and was soon followed by Podo. Oskar and the family made their way across the bridge, but Podo and the boys stopped halfway to fight back the Fangs. After one of the trolls were killed by Podo, Oskar watched Nugget attack the second troll and cause the bridge to collapse. He watched the moment Nugget sacrificed himself by pulling the troll into the water.

Oskar and the family set up camp for the night at some ruins and Oskar told them that if he survives these times, he will write down everything that happened at Miller's Bridge. Oskar watched as Leeli played a dirge for Nugget by the cliffs. Later on, he heard Janner say Gnag the Nameless was near.

Stranded[]

When a toothy cow came charging toward their camp, Oskar and the family quickly hid and the cow soon died, and they discovered it was because it had a Strander spear in its side. Oskar and the family made their way through northern Glipwood Forest, hoping to avoid the Stranders, and along the way Oskar chatted with Janner about the First Book. They eventually encountered a Strander girl named Maraly who demanded to know where her cow went. After receiving directions, Maraly escorted Oskar and the family to her camp in the East Bend where they were introduced to the Strander chief Claxton Weaver who threatened to kill them if they didn't have anything good to offer. Podo told a story of when he met Growlfist the Strander King and swiped his pone.

However, Claxton didn't believe the story and ordered for Oskar, Podo, and Nia to be thrown in the Blapp and the children locked in the cages. They were saved when Kalmar pocketed Claxton's pone and became the new clan chief. The next day, Oskar and the family were forced to leave when a Strander call announced that the Black Carriage was coming, and Oskar and the family were led by Maraly to an entrance to the Strander tunnels. They made their way through the tunnels and eventually came to a Strander burrow beneath an abandoned house in Dugtown.

The Roundish Widow[]

Oskar and Podo made their way through Strander burrows to get to the Roundish Widow to seek help from a friend of Oskar's named Ronchy McHiggins. When they finally got there, Oskar and Podo spoke with Ronchy and explained their situation. Ronchy told them he will hire a guide for them and also told them to be back at midnight. Later on, Oskar discussed what he learnt from the First Book with Nia. When Oskar voiced his excitement to tell Janner the mysteries he had learned, Podo was indignant and said stories like those were the reason the Fangs came to Skree, Wendolyn's death, and why they were forced to leave Glipwood. Oskar, however, told him he'd rather be where he is now than live under the oppression of the Fangs.

When it was one hour to midnight, Oskar and the family crept through the streets and made their way to the Roundish Widow where Ronchy told them their guide, Migg, will arrive shortly after he leaves. Oskar thanked him and waited with the family for Migg. Migg eventually arrived but soon revealed himself to be a traitor and let the Fangs into the tavern and Oskar and the family were separated from the boys. As Podo fought back the Fangs, Oskar, Leeli, and Nia tried to get the side door open, but it was locked. After Podo finally opened it by ramming into the door, Oskar and the family ran outside but were then surrounded by Fangs. They were saved by the Florid Sword, who told them to flee while they still could, and Oskar and the family were forced to escape without the boys.

The Sundering[]

Oskar waited in the Strander burrow with Leeli, Nia, and Podo for the boys to arrive. After Nia said she will look for them if they don't arrive by nightfall, Podo said Leeli needs her mother and he said he'll go, but Oskar pointed out that Podo's broken arm will do no help so he'll go instead. When it was night, Oskar headed to the Roundish Widow and interrogated Ronchy and soon learnt that Ronchy had given the boys directions to the burrow. Since the boys hadn't arrived, Oskar sought help from Gammon, but was unsuccessful and was forced to deliver the news to Nia that he couldn't find the boys. Maraly arrived and told Oskar and the family that the Stranders put a bounty on their heads so they have to leave.
