Nia Helmer Wingfeather (Nia Igiby) (NEE-uh IG-ih-bee[1]) was the wife of Esben Wingfeather and the daughter of Podo Helmer and Wendolyn Igiby Helmer. She was born in the Green Hollows, but then became Queen of Anniera when she married Esben, The High King of Anniera. She had three children, Janner, Throne Warden of Anniera, Kalmar, High King of Anniera, and Leeli, Song Maiden of Anniera.

History[]

Early life[]

Nia Helmer was born to Podo Helmer and Wendolyn Igiby, and raised in Ban Rona of the Green Hollows. While living in the Hollows, she became friends with Olumphia Groundwich and Rudric ban Yorna. She eventually was wed to Esben Wingfeather, the High King of Anniera, and lived in Castle Rysen. She had three children: Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli. Nia taught them T.H.A.G.S., the Three Honored and Great Subjects.

Great War[]

In 442 of the Fourth Epoch, Gnag the Nameless' Fangs of Dang invaded Anniera. Nia, Wendolyn, Podo, and Artham led young Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli out of the castle. The Fangs killed Wendolyn, and presumably killed Esben. They then fled to Skree and lived in Glipwood Township, and took up the name Igiby. They lived in the Igiby Cottage which was built by Podo's great-great-great-great grandfather.

Post-Great War[]

Nia, Podo, Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli lived in the Igiby Cottage for nine years under the oppression of the Fangs of Dang. The Fangs would take children to Castle Throg, the Phoob Islands, and the Fork Factory in the Black Carriage. Just over a week before the Wingfeather War began, a girl about Janner's age from Torrboro, named Sara Cobbler, was taken by the Black Carriage. Nia had been crying about it.[2]

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness[]

In 4/451, nine years after the Great War, Nia's children were celebrating Dragon Day in Glipwood Township. When they didn't come home, Nia and Podo looked for them at the cliffs of Glipwood, but didn't find them. Nia then found them imprisoned by the Fangs in Glipwood Jail. She bribed Commander Gnorm with jewels and the promise of making maggotloaf for him every week, and the children were set free.[3][4]

The jewels Nia had given to Gnorm had the Seal of Anniera on them, which led the Fangs to believe that the Igibys had the Jewels of Anniera which Gnag the Nameless sought. The Fangs burned their barn and searched their house. They captured the Igibys, bound them with ropes, and put them in Glipwood Jail. Commander Gnorm sent for the Black Carriage to take the Igibys to Fort Lamendron to interogate them, but Podo stole one of the Fangs' swords; and the Igibys, with the help of Peet the Sock Man, killed the Glipwood Fangs before they could put them in the Carriage.[5][6][7][8]

The Igibys then fled to Anklejelly Manor, where they hid in the basement while Artham and a newly revived Nugget fought off the Fangs that were chasing them.
