Synopsis[]
It’s Dragon Day! The Igiby children stumble into trouble and have a magical encounter.
Plot[]
The Black Carriage[]
Underneath a crescent moon, a man in Glipwood Township is taken by the Black Carriage as his wife watches on from the front door of their house, heartbroken.
Toothy cow[]
Janner Igiby is reading Pembrick's Creaturepedia as he sits in a tree. He turns to the page on bumpy digtoads and sees a note that says "BEWARE GLIPWOOD FOREST!! Read this book. -Oskar". Despite the note, Janner decides to go just into the edge of the forest to see some of the creatures himself. He spots a bumpy digtoad, which makes an attempt to grab him with its tongue.
Meanwhile, Janner's younger brother Tink, built a bow and some arrows and is attempting to hit a target painted on an old sack. He spots a cave blat, which he tries to shoot, but the arrow misses its target and instead hits a toothy cow in the forest.
Janner, having ventured a bit deeper into the forest, spots a fazzle dove. As he watches the frightened bird, he looks at its page in the Creaturepedia and notes a few of its traits: "Cute, wary look in eyes, stenchy." The fazzle dove releases an awful smell, which Janner flees from and runs back outside of the forest.
Janner begins to hear something and climbs up a tree to get a better view. He sees Tink running from a furious toothy cow. Janner calls Tink over and helps him up the tree. The toothy cow begins to attack the tree the two boys are in. Using his Creaturepedia, Janner points out that toothy cows like glipfruit, which happens to be in the tree they are standing in. After throwing a few glipfruit in an attempt to make the toothy cow leave, Tink decides to use his bow to shoot the fruit far away. When the toothy cow runs off to eat the fruit, the two boys quickly climb down the tree and run back home.
The Igiby Cottage[]
On the front porch of the Igiby Cottage, the youngest of the Igiby children, Leeli, is playing a tune on her whistleharp while her grandfather Podo Helmer listens on as he carves an image of a pirate ship on a block of wood. Leeli notices her dog Nugget is barking and growling at the totato patch. Leeli informs Podo that more thwaps are in the garden. Annoyed, Podo gets up and stomps over to the garden, grumbling about how he'll throw the thwaps off of a cliff, and after Leeli tells him not to, he assures her he'll let them barely live.
In the kitchen, Nia Igiby, the Igiby children's mother, is putting maggotloaf into a crate. When she hears a bang on the window and sees that a thwap had slammed into the window, she smiles amusedly.
Outside, Podo, Leeli, and Nugget were capturing the thwaps and tossing them into a bag. Nia comes outside with a thwap in her hand and lets them know that they missed one, then tosses it into the bag. Janner and Tink return home and run straight for the front door, but stop when Nia calls for them and reminds them that they are on dinner duty.
Dinner at the Igiby Cottage[]
The family all sit down at the table and thank the Maker for the food before they begin eating. As they have their dinner, they begin discussing how excited they are for Dragon Day tomorrow, but they're interrupted by a knock at the door. Nia asks Janner if he returned something like she asked, and he responds saying that he meant to. Podo assures him that he'll deal with it. He walks to the front door and opens it to see two angry Fangs, Brak and Slarb at the door. Brak tells them that they had committed a violation by not returning a garden hoe. Podo apologizes and gives them the garden hoe. Slarb notices Nugget sniffing near him, and he whacks the dog with the butt of his spear. Leeli runs to Nugget and hugs him, telling Slarb to not hurt him. Slarb begins to threaten Nugget, which provokes the dog to angrily bark at Slarb, scaring the Fang.
After dinner, the family get ready for bed. The boys discuss a few things about Dragon Day. When Nia comes to kiss them goodnight, she reminds them that Dragon Day is a day where everyone can forget about the Fangs, but the Fangs don't forget about them, so the children should have fun, but no shenanigans. She also reminds Janner that he is responsible for Tink and Leeli, which Janner is disappointed about.
Dragon Day[]
The family climb into their wagon as Podo straps it to Danny the carthorse. Nia loads the crate of Maggotloaf into the wagon and sits next to Podo and the family set off to the festival. Before they can enter the Dragon Day festival however, they have to offer payment to the Fangs. Nia gives the crate of Maggotloaf to Commander Gnorm, who is delighted when he sees the contents of the crate, and he begins to devour the Maggotloaf, disgusting some of the nearby people.
The children head to Books 'N' Crannies to return some books. When they get there, they run into Sara Cobbler, one of their friends and also the girl whom Janner has a crush on. Janner and Leeli chat with Sara for a bit, but are eventually interrupted by Tink, who really wants to get to the Dragon Day games. Sara says goodbye as the Igibys head inside Books 'N' Crannies.
At the tavern, Podo hears from Shaggy about ships sailing to the Phoob Islands and Trolls on the move in the Linnard Woodlands. He also hears a rumour about three children from Dugtown were taken by the Black Carriage.
At Books 'N' Crannies, Janner asks Oskar N. Reteep, the proprietor of Books 'N' Crannies, why Sea Dragon songs make people act strange. Oskar tells him that there is unfortunately no explanation on why it happens. When the children hear the trumpets announcing that the games are starting, they quickly head to the games, which are all won by Tink.
Armulyn the Bard[]
The games are eventually interrupted by Mayor Blaggus with an announcement. He first acknowledges the presence of the Fangs before presenting Armulyn the Bard, who shocks everyone when he says "Fangs are ugly." He begins singing and playing a song on his Whistleharp about the Shining Isle of Anniera, which all the people present become moved by. The Fangs, however cringe and hiss at the music. As Armulyn continues playing his Whistleharp, the Blaggus boys come up to Tink and tell him that they have enough Sparkpowder to set off a Pop Rocket. Tink is amazed by this and follows them. When Janner realizes Tink is gone, he tells Leeli to stay while he gets Tink. When Janner finds Tink and tells him how he had to leave Leeli alone, listening to the songs. Tink asks Janner "what songs?" The boys then realize that Armulyn had finished singing and that Leeli was gone. Worried, they both go looking for her.
Leeli, admiring how Armulyn played and sang, went to talk with him. She tells him how his song made her want to laugh, sing and cry all at the same time, which Armulyn tells her that there can be a kind of magic in music. Leeli explains how she doesn't think there is any magic in her music, and she then asks Armulyn what his secret is. The bard tells her that some songs can make people feel homesick even when they're right at home. Their conversation is interrupted by the Blaggus boys' Pop Rocket, which Nugget is frightened by, and he runs off. Leeli apologizes to Armulyn and chases after Nugget.
A tussle with Slarb[]
Janner and Tink, still searching for Leeli, hear Nugget barking, which the two of them run towards. Slarb, who is trying to pull a Sea Dragon kite down from a chimney, gets a fright from Nugget, who is barking furiously at him. Slarb picks the dog up and prepares to bite him. When Leeli sees this, she is shocked and kicks Slarb and whacks him with her crutch. Slarb snatches the crutch away, breaks it in half, and tosses it away. Janner and Tink quickly arrive and Slarb begins threatening them. Seeing the broken crutch on the ground, Tink throws it at Slarb, but Slarb quickly dodges, causing the crutch to bounce off of a wall and knock a stone loose from the chimney. The chimney is pushed by Artham who quickly flees the scene as the stones topple on Slarb, knocking the Fang out. Janner and Tink help Leeli up and the three children and Nugget quickly run away as Slarb gets up and begins chasing after them. The Fang is eventually stopped by Brak and Vop, who tell him that if he harms the Igiby children, Gnorm will be furious, due to how Nia bakes the best Maggotloaf in Glipwood.
The Sea Dragon song[]
The Igiby children, having gotten away from Slarb, go to rest at the cliffs. They can hear and see the Sea Dragons swimming in the sea just by the cliffs. Leeli suddenly begins singing Yurgen's Tune. As she sings, Yurgen emerges from the sea, and Tink sees an image depicting a Sea Dragon towering over a smaller Sea Dragon that was killed by a spear. Next to the larger dragon is the Holoré and Holoél. The image fades, and Tink can see his surroundings again. Yurgen wonders how Leeli knows the song. Janner hears Yurgen's thoughts and tells Tink. Yurgen asks Janner if he could understand him, but Janner is too confused to respond. Leeli's singing is eventually interrupted by Nia, who covers Leeli's mouth and tells her, "that's enough". Annoyed, Yurgen retreats back underwater. As Nia leads the children home, they tell her what had happened as Leeli sang, but Nia tells them to stop talking about it.
Back at the Igiby Cottage[]
When Nia, the children, and Nugget return to the Igiby Cottage, Podo walks over to them and is about to reprimand the children, but Nia tells him to batten the hatches. Janner, who is feeling guilty for losing Leeli, apologizes to Podo, who is understanding. Janner then tells him about how he could hear Yurgen speaking, and he asks him how that happened, to which Podo just replies "speaking, eh? Hmmph."
When the children are all in bed, Nia asks Podo what they should do, and Podo tells her that they should lie low for a few days and hope that the Fangs won't do anything to them.

Differences from Novel[]
- In the book, the Black Carriage is mentioned to have passed the Igiby cottage at the beginning of the novel[1]. In the episode, this never happens; instead a man is taken in the Black Carriage and is never seen passing the cottage.
- In the book, Sara Cobbler is only mentioned in the beginning of the novel as the most recent victim of the Black Carriage[1]. In the episode, she appears.
- In the book, the story opens up with the Igiby children working around the cottage[2]. In the episode, this is replaced with Janner exploring the Glipwood Forest and Kalmar practicing his archery.
- In the book, Leeli throws a stick multiple times throughout the games as she and her siblings watch them[3]. In the episode, this never happens and Kalmar is a participant in the games.
- In the book, the Fangs rush at Armulyn after he says that Fangs are ugly[3]. In the episode, this never happens and the Fangs hiss at him from afar.
- In the book, Armulyn sings "The Ballad of Lanric and Rube"[4]. In the episode, he sings "The Green of Rysen Hill".
- In the book, Leeli runs off following Nugget, which leads to the Fangs trying to kill Nugget[4]. In the episode, this happens, but the reason it happens is because Kalmar tries to follow the Blaggus boys, who have a poprocket, and Janner stops him.
- Leeli never directly speaks to Armulyn after his performance. She only sees him after Dragon Day as she's led back to the Igiby cottage[5].
- In the book, Nugget chases a thwap that falls out of a tree, which nearly gets him killed by the Fangs[6]. In the episode, he chases the Blaggus boy's poprocket as Leeli speaks to Armulyn.
- In the book, Slarb and several Fangs try to kill Nugget as the Igiby kids are forced to watch on[7]. In the episode, this never happens and is instead replaced by Slarb trying to eat Nugget while trying to get rid of the Blaggus boy's poprocket. The other Fangs never appear in the episode.
- In the book, the Fangs are knocked unconscious by Zouzab[7]. In the episode, Slarb is knocked unconscious by a chimney, which is implied to have been pushed by Peet.
- In the book, the cliffs the Igiby kids run on to avoid the Fangs is called "The Glipper Trail"[8]. In the episode, the cliffs are simply known as "the cliffs of Glipwood".
- In the book, the sea dragons listen to Leeli as she sings "Yurgen's Tune"[9]. In the episode, this happens alongside Yurgen inspecting her and her siblings.
- In the original novel, Yurgen never appears. In the series, he first officially appears in North! Or Be Eaten.
- In the book, the Igiby children are arrested after Leeli sings "Yurgen's Tune" for attacking Slarb and his cronies[9]. In the episode, this never happens, and this is replaced with her being cut off by Nia before she can finish it.
- In the episode, Janner tells Kalmar that the three have to skip the dragons to avoid the Fangs before Leeli sings "Yurgen's Tune". In the book, he never says this nor does this happen[9].
- In the book, Nia promises maggotloaf to keep the Fangs at bay after picking up her children from the Glipwood Jail[5]. In the episode, this is used to gain entrance into Glipwood.
