Synopsis[]
It’s Dragon Day! The Igiby children stumble into trouble and have a magical encounter.
Plot[]
In the middle of the night, the Black Carriage collects a man from Glipwood. The next day, Janner Igiby goes to explore the edges of Glipwood Forest to spot some of the creatures that reside there. His brother Tink, who had angered a toothy cow, comes running over, and they both manage to escape by distracting the cow with some glipfruit. At the Igiby Cottage, Leeli and her grandpa, Podo Helmer, along with Nugget the dog, catch several thwaps raiding the garden. In the evening, the Igibys sit down to have dinner, the children expressing how excited they are for Dragon Day, but they are interrupted by a couple of Fangs who inform them they had not returned the "weapon" the family had borrowed. Podo apologises and gives them the garden hoe.
The next day, the family head into town for the festival, and the children first make their way to Books and Crannies to return some books. Afterwards, they stroll through town, enjoying everything the festival has to offer. Tink participates in several games, dominating each of them. After the games, Mayor Blaggus announces Armulyn the Bard, who publicly insults the Fangs and sings to the festivalgoers. Meanwhile, Nia visits Polly Gunkle, whose husband was taken by the Black Carriage the night prior. Tink sneaks off during Armulyn's song to join his friends who had obtained a pop rocket, and Janner follows after him. After the song, Leeli goes to talk to Armulyn, and they discuss music before Nugget runs off. The boys look for Leeli and soon find her trying to save Nugget from Slarb the Fang. Peet the Sockman causes a chimney to collapse onto the Fang, allowing the kids to escape.
The kids run to the cliffs just in time to watch the sea dragons sing. Leeli begins singing with them, and the dragons notice. Tink has a vision of two dragons, one of them dead, beside chunks of blue crystals. One of the dragons approaches the children, and Janner hears him speak. Leeli's song is interrupted by Nia, and the dragons leave. Nia takes the children home and tells Podo to "batten the hatches".

Differences from Novel[]
- In the book, the Black Carriage is mentioned to have passed the Igiby cottage at the beginning of the novel.[1] In the episode, this never happens; instead a man is taken in the Black Carriage and is never seen passing the cottage.
- In the book, Sara Cobbler is only mentioned in the beginning of the novel as the most recent victim of the Black Carriage.[1] In the episode, she appears.
- In the book, the story opens up with the Igiby children working around the cottage.[2] In the episode, this is replaced with Janner exploring the Glipwood Forest and Kalmar practicing his archery.
- In the book, Leeli throws a stick multiple times throughout the games as she and her siblings watch them.[3] In the episode, this never happens and Kalmar is a participant in the games.
- In the book, the Fangs rush at Armulyn after he says that Fangs are ugly.[3] In the episode, this never happens and the Fangs hiss at him from afar.
- In the book, Armulyn sings "The Ballad of Lanric and Rube".[4] In the episode, he sings "The Green of Rysen Hill".
- In the book, Leeli runs off following Nugget, which leads to the Fangs trying to kill Nugget.[4] In the episode, this happens, but the reason it happens is because Kalmar tries to follow the Blaggus boys, who have a poprocket, and Janner stops him.
- Leeli never directly speaks to Armulyn after his performance. She only sees him after Dragon Day as she's led back to the Igiby cottage.[5]
- In the book, Nugget chases a thwap that falls out of a tree, which nearly gets him killed by the Fangs.[6] In the episode, he chases the Blaggus boy's poprocket as Leeli speaks to Armulyn.
- In the book, Slarb and several Fangs try to kill Nugget as the Igiby kids are forced to watch on.[7] In the episode, this never happens and is instead replaced by Slarb trying to eat Nugget while trying to get rid of the Blaggus boy's poprocket. The other Fangs never appear in the episode.
- In the book, the Fangs are knocked unconscious by Zouzab.[7] In the episode, Slarb is knocked unconscious by a chimney, which is implied to have been pushed by Peet.
- In the book, the cliffs the Igiby kids run on to avoid the Fangs is called "The Glipper Trail".[8] In the episode, the cliffs are simply known as "the cliffs of Glipwood".
- In the book, the sea dragons listen to Leeli as she sings "Yurgen's Tune".[9] In the episode, this happens alongside Yurgen inspecting her and her siblings.
- In the original novel, Yurgen never appears. In the series, he first officially appears in North! Or Be Eaten.
- In the book, the Igiby children are arrested after Leeli sings "Yurgen's Tune" for attacking Slarb and his cronies.[9] In the episode, this never happens, and this is replaced with her being cut off by Nia before she can finish it.
- In the episode, Janner tells Kalmar that the three have to skip the dragons to avoid the Fangs before Leeli sings "Yurgen's Tune". In the book, he never says this nor does this happen.[9]
- In the book, Nia promises maggotloaf to keep the Fangs at bay after picking up her children from the Glipwood Jail.[5] In the episode, this is used to gain entrance into Glipwood.
