Synopsis[]

The kids make a plan of escape, while Commander Gnorm schemes to discover a secret.

Summary[]

Food for the prisoners[]

Nia and Podo are in Glipwood Jail. They're disturbed by a Fang named Velp who brings them some food. Velp starts mocking Podo when he notices him not eating. Annoyed, Podo reaches through the bars and grabs the Fang's leg, causing Velp to fall backwards. Commander Gnorm enters the room unimpressed. He orders Velp to "go sleep it off", referring to the pain, and he then tells Nia that she had him fooled for thinking she was just another pitiful soul trying to keep her children out of the Black Carriage, and Nia responds saying that is exactly what she is. Gnorm tells her that he knows about the Jewels of Anniera, and he shows her the jewels that Slarb had recovered from the Igiby Cottage. Nia asks him if he really thinks that her mother's old trinkets were the Jewels of Anniera, but Gnorm dismisses her question, believing Nia to know more that she was telling and that the Fangs will soon find the Jewels. Nia responds saying that the jewels he has right now were all the jewels she owned, and Gnorm tells her that perhaps the children "will have something more to squeal about" once the Fangs capture them. Podo points out that the kids know nothing of the jewelry, and Gnorm tells them to cut a deal while they can, because the Black Carriage was coming for them and that nothing would stop it, so they should either tell him about the jewels, or they can keep the secret and the Black Carriage will take their children as well. Podo threatens to skin Gnorm like a snake if he lays his hands on the children, but Gnorm just scoffs and leaves the room. Podo reassures Nia that the Fangs at least haven't found the children yet, and Nia thanks the Maker as she rests her head on her father's chest. Podo assumes that the kids would've made it to Oskar's by now, and that Oskar knows the plan.

An escape plan[]

Ferinia shuts the door to her shop as she, Oskar and the children discuss what to do next. Oskar explains to the kids that the Fangs will be hunting them, so he has to hide them until he can smuggle them out of Glipwood. Janner points out that Ferinia said that the Black Carriage was coming, so when it does, they will never see Nia and Podo again. Ferinia says that it's true, and that if they have a move, then they make it tonight, but Oskar explains that they can't just stroll into a Fang jail to free the prisoners. Janner suggests that they lure the Fangs out, but Oskar tells him that the cell would be locked, so Tink suggests that they steal the keys, but Oskar points out that they don't have enough help. Leeli suggests that they ask their friends for help, but Oskar still thinks it will be impossible. Tink then suggests that they try something similar to an event in a book called "The Mildly Unpleasant Adventures of Nearly Eleanor" in which the gunkee wore Eleanor's cloak and tossed berrybuns from the tower. Oskar corrects him by saying that they threw plumyums, and he agrees by saying that it caused the grobblins to scurry away from their hole. Tink finishes by saying that the grobblins then swarmed the tower while Eleanor snuck into their hole and stole back the plotus. Oskar says that he sees Tink's point, but he can't let the children set foot in the jail. Seeing the kids' sad faces, he says that he'll do it. He tells Ferinia that they'll need her cunning. Ferinia pulls out a book and pen and points out that the Fangs have orders to arrest the Igiby children on sight, so they'll give them a sight.

Oskar returns to Books and Crannies and jumps when he sees Zouzab at his desk. Zouzab explains to him that the Fangs came to the store looking for the Igiby children, and he told them that he had not seen Tink or Tink's berries for three days, so he thinks that perhaps the children were eaten by dragons. Oskar tells him that he needs to prepare the wagon for another shipment. Zouzab asks him if he is retrieving more books from Dugtown, and Oskar responds saying "odds and ends."

The plan in motion[]

A Fang named Orble is picking at her teeth as she sits at the jail porch under the cloak of night. She spots three hooded children running across the street, with one of them carrying what appears to be a crutch. She orders them to halt, but they keep on running, so she calls for Critch and the two Fangs chase after the children. The two Fangs find the crutch underneath a bridge with none of the children in sight. Ferinia quickly steals the keys before the Fangs suddenly spot the children and they continue chasing after them. Ferinia sneaks away to outside of a house that Bunce is waiting in from the top window, and she tosses the keys up to him before sneaking away. Bunce then heads to another window and sees Nugget. He throws the keys down to the dog, who then runs over to the Igiby children, who are waiting outside of the jail. Tink asks why Oskar hasn't arrived yet, and Janner guesses that he must've seen a Fang patrol or a signal from Ferinia, but he should arrive soon. Orble and Critch corner the children whom they believed were the Igibys, but they discover that the children were not them. Janner, having heard the Fangs, realizes that the guards were coming back, so Tink decides that they should go into the jail to rescue Nia and Podo. Despite Janner saying no, Tink proceeds into the jail forcing Janner and Leeli to follow him in, and the children open up the door into the jail. When Nia and Podo see them, they plead with the children to leave before the Fangs catch them. Tink says that they will leave once they free them. He unlocks the cell and the kids untie Nia and Podo's hands. Podo asks where Oskar was, and Janner tells him that he was supposed to help them. The family attempt to sneak out of the jail without being caught. As they leave the jail, Nugget begins whimpering, and Leeli tells him to hush. The family are suddenly ambushed by the Fangs. Gnorm thanks them for saving the trouble of having to capture them. Janner asks Gnorm how he knew what they were doing, and Gnorm tells him that it is "surprising what you can get for a bit o' nasty fruit." and he tosses some fruit to Zouzab, who is sitting atop the roof of the jail, and Gnorm orders the Fangs to lock the family up.

A New Plan[]

The Fangs tie the family's hands with ropes and lock them all up in a cell together. Janner asks Tink what was he thinking when he decided to free Podo and Nia without Oskar, and Tink tells him that they had to do something. Podo asks the kids why they didn't stay hidden like they were told. Tink explains to him that Ferinia and Oskar helped them make a plan that almost worked, and Janner says that the plan was ruined when Tink decided to run right into Gnorm's trap and he had to follow him. Tink asks Janner how is it his fault, inadvertently revealing that his hands were no longer bound. Nia asks Tink how he was untied, and Tink shows her a dagger he took from Anklejelly Manor. Janner explains that they went to Anklejelly Manor to look for the Florid Sword, hoping that he could help them rescue Sara. Nia says that they will talk about that later as Tink cuts the ropes tying the family's hands. Janner then mentions the sword with "Esben Wingfeather" written on it and asks why their surname was "Igiby" if their father was "Wingfeather". Nia tells him that it was because Podo's family were Igibys and that after Esben died in the war, she took up the name to avoid drawing any attention. Before Janner can ask why, the family are interrupted by Orble, who tells them to be quiet and that they'll have plenty of time to talk in the Black Carriage. When Orble leaves, Podo tells the family that they will need to make a plan, because once they're in the Black Carriage, it'll be too late. Podo asks Tink to pass him the dagger, and when Tink points out that the Fangs have swords and spears, Podo tells him that sometimes all it takes is a small pebble to start an avalanche.

The arrival of the Carriage[]

The Black Carriage speeds over to the jail as a murder of crows flies overhead in the night sky. Podo hides the dagger as he pretends that his arms are still bound. Velp and Orble enter the room and open the cell door as they prepare to lead the family into the Black Carriage. When the family are taken outside, Gnorm tells them that it is their last chance to tell him where the Jewels of Anniera are. Podo just says that it is a fine day for a ride through the country. He instantly attacks the two Fangs standing closest to him before ordering Nia and the children to run. Nia quickly punches the Fangs closest to her before fleeing with the children. Podo continues fighting the Fangs but is eventually knocked to the ground by a Fang preparing to kill him. Nia orders the Fang to stop and that if Podo is killed, she will take her secrets to the grave. Podo is taking into the Black Carriage as Nia and the children follow him.

The Battle of Glipwood[]

Before they enter the Carriage, however, they suddenly hear shrieking, and they see Peet charging at the Fangs with bird claws poking through holes in the socks worn on his hands. Nia quickly leads the children away as the Fangs prepare to fight Peet. Running back to the Carriage, Nia frees Podo and hands him a weapon. As Peet fights the Fangs, he orders the kids to run away. Brak turns to the children and asks them where they think they're going. Picking up a sword, Janner points it at Brak as Peet jumps at the Fang and knocks him forwards. Brak lands towards Janner and is stabbed by the blade. Nia runs to the children to protect them, but doesn't notice Critch approaching them. Nugget quickly turns to Critch and attacks the Fang's face. Gnorm turns to Podo and the two begin fighting. Gnorm eventually slices Podo's stomach, weakening the latter, and prepares to kill him. Janner quickly spots a dagger and stabs Gnorm in the back, killing the Fang.

The battle is over[]

As Podo gets up, the family watch as all of the Fangs' bodies cripple to dust. They suddenly hear a whistle and the Black Carriage driver attempts to flee, but he is knocked out when Jebb throws a stone at him from a roof. Podo asks if everyone is alright, and they notice Peet looking ashamed. Nia approaches him and places her hand on his arm. Leeli suddenly realises that Nugget isn't with them, so she calls for him and eventually spots him lying on the ground, injured and whimpering. Leeli begins crying as she picks him up and hugs him. Peet kneels in front of Leeli and holds out his hands. Leeli gives him Nugget and he takes the dog with him as he runs back to his treehouse. Janner wonders where Oskar is, and the family run to Books and Crannies. They search the shop for Oskar and eventually find him wounded. Podo tells Tink to go to the inn and fetch the Shoosters. Nia places some fabric on Oskar's wound as Oskar explains that Zouzab was trying to stop him from going to the wagon, and they then had a scuffle that eventually lead to Zouzab stabbing him. Podo tells Oskar that they will take care of him, but Oskar tells them that Zouzab had whistled a message to Fort Lamendron and that a whole garrison of Fangs will be coming, so the family must flee. Tink returns with Addie and Joe Shooster and Nia asks Addie if she and her husband can look after Oskar, which Addie says of course. Oskar reassures Janner that he is likely going to heal. Janner says goodbye and the family make their way out of Books and Crannies.

Saying goodbye[]

Outside, several townsfolk along with Mayor Blaggus are conversing about what had just happened. When they see the family, Shaggy asks what happened inside, and Podo explains that Oskar was stabbed by Zouzab, but Oskar is most likely going to survive. A woman asks them why they attacked the Fangs, and eventually all the townsfolk start asking them questions and rebuking them. Podo tells them that they didn't mean to start trouble, and that if there is anyone to blame, it's Gnag the Nameless. He then explains to the townsfolk that they plan to be long gone before the Fangs arrive and that everyone should do the same. The townsfolk begin returning to their homes, and Shaggy then says that he's going to stay and that bibes are free for anyone else who stays. Buzzard Willie walks over to Podo with a crate and apologizes to Podo for stealing Merna Bidgeholler from him, and he gives Podo the crate. Podo thanks him and says goodbye to Buzzard Willie. Ferinia pulls up in a wagon and tells the Igibys that she got them a ride out of town.

Preparing to leave[]

The Igibys return to their cottage to get supplies. Nia grabs some packs she kept hidden as the kids stare at their ransacked former home. The family load up their supplies into the wagon as Tink continues staring at the cottage, upset. As Podo loads the crate from Buzzard Willie into the wagon, he suddenly hears hissing and turns to see Slarb holding a blade up to Tink's neck. Podo says that they'll give Slarb anything he wants if he doesn't hurt Tink. Slarb demands that they give him the crate, and Podo obeys, sliding the crate towards Slarb. The Fang throws Tink to the ground and places his foot on the boy's head as he prepares to open the crate. To Slarb's surprise, there are several thwaps inside the crate, and when the thwaps see Slarb, they all start attacking him. Tink quickly runs to the wagon as Podo charges at Slarb and knocks the Fang away. Slarb quickly runs off, and Podo prepares to chase after him, but Nia tells him that they need to leave now, and she points at several lights heading towards town. Podo hops into the wagon and begins driving it away from the Cottage. The children cry as they leave, and Nia tries to comfort them. Podo looks back and tells Janner to have a stout heart. As they leave, the Fangs reach Glipwood.
