Smoke rises from Glipwood, and Fangs are seen searching the town. Addie Shooster is carrying a basket as she makes her way to the Only Inn, careful to not draw attention.

. . .

The scene changes to a room in the Only Inn where a wounded Oskar N. Reteep pushes a wardrobe aside to crawl out from a hidden room.

Oskar: "In the words of Sir Rissy Claphorn, 'My word, but that is heavy!'"

As he attempts to crawl out, his stab wound reopens, soaking his bandage. He leans back, and his attention is drawn to a shelf carrying a pitcher of water and a book.

Oskar: "Ooh. Ooh."

Oskar reaches out to the shelf and grabs the book.

Oskar: "Ah! Oh, thank the Maker."

Weakened, Oskar collapses just as Joe Shooster walks in.

Joe: "Oskar!"

Joe rushes to Oskar's side and helps him up.

Joe: "Why are you out of bed?"

Oskar: "Ah, Joe. Retrieving my most cherished copy of "Edible Worms of Skree." It's a first edition--"

Joe: "We have to keep you hidden, old friend."

Joe walks over to a window and stares out at the ruined town.

Joe: "Glipwood is crawling with Fangs."

Oskar: "Oh, dear. Looking for the Jewels of Anniera, no doubt!"

Joe: "What does that have to do with the Igibys?"

Oskar: "Er, well, yes . . . The truth of it is, Joe . . . Well . . . the two are one and the same."

Joe: "What?"

Oskar: "The Igiby children are the Jewels of Anniera."

Joe: "Impossible."

Oskar: "Yes. But also true. They are the exiled king, throne warden, and song maiden of the Shining Isle."

Joe: "No wonder. Right under our noses all this time."

Joe helps Oskar back into the secret room.

Joe: "How much does Gnag know?"

Oskar: "Hard to say. Enough to want to capture those children. You mustn't speak of this to anyone, Joe! Not with that traitorous Zouzab skulking about!"

Joe: "All the more reason you need to stay hidden and rest. Addie will be up soon to change your bandage."

Joe drags the wardrobe back into place just as Addie walks in.

Addie: "Found a few more bandages."

Joe smiles and turns to move the wardrobe again. Addie gasps as Zouzab appears by the window, and Joe pauses. As Zouzab enters the room, Addie hides the bandages under a bed.

Zouzab: "Curious . . . scuttling about in empty rooms."

Joe: "We're innkeepers, Zouzab. It's our job."

Addie: "Have to keep rooms clean and ready for guests."

Zouzab surveys the room suspiciously.

Joe: "Why are you here, ridgerunner?"

Zouzab: "The Fangs have requested the pleasure of your company. Immediately."

Addie lowers her voice to a whisper.

Addie: "Joe."

Joe: "It's alright, dear."

Joe and Addie leave the room with Zouzab following close behind. The camera cuts to Oskar, who had been listening to the whole thing.

Oskar: "Zouzab! What to do? What to do?"

He hears Addie scream outside, and he pushes aside stacks of books and a poster of the Florid Sword to look through a pipe out into the street. He sees Addie on her stomach with a Fang named Gude pressing his foot against her back.

Addie: "Get your dirty--"

Gude: "'Ow I loves to watch 'em sssquirm. Crow just came. It'll be the carriage for you two on suspicion of cavorting with resistance."

Two Fangs toss Joe into the Black Carriage.

Oskar: "No. No!"

Addie: "Joe!"

Addie runs into the carriage to her husband's side, and they both glare at the Fangs as they shut the door. The Black Carriage rides off as the Fangs laugh.

. . .

The scene cuts to Glipwood Forest where Podo is in the middle of training the boys. He taps two sticks together.

Podo: "Quill diggle! Quill diggle!"

Leeli watches from atop Nugget while playing her whistleharp. Janner and Tink draw their daggers, and Podo tugs at some ropes, pulling up two quill diggle targets. The boys swiftly throw their daggers at the targets.

Podo: "Horned hounds! Pack 'o hounds, boys!"

Leeli: "I've 'fled to safety,' grandpa!"

Podo: "'Atta girl!"

Leeli: "Can't I at least throw rocks?"

Podo: "Not in the plan. Just stay tucked away."

Janner and Tink go to retrieve their daggers. Janner's dagger falls from the target and Tink is suddenly distracted by the smell of food, forgetting all about his dagger.

Tink: "Mmmm."

The camera cuts to Nia who is in Peet's treehouse packing food for the journey. Tink tries to sneak into the room.

Nia: "You'll be wanting this when we're trekking across the Ice Prairies in a few weeks, so don't even think about sneaking it now."

Tink groans and leaves.

. . .

Back in Glipwood, another carriage arrives, and General Khrak steps out. Oskar still watches from the secret room.

Gude: "General Khrak, we've swept the town. No sign of the nasty Pigibys or fat bookman."

Khrak: "Have you looked in the forest yet?"

Gude: "It's a . . . it's a big forest, sir."

Khrak: "Then why are you standing here? Go. Find. Them."

Zouzab: "They can't find them."

Khrak: "Say what you have to say, ridgerunner."

Zouzab jumps in front of Khrak and bows.

Zouzab: "Most generous General Khrak, bestower of delicious . . . fruits?"

Khrak: "That can be arranged. Tell me what you know."

Zouzab: "Igibys are sneaky hiders. Deep in Glipwood Forest. I told your troops, but Fangs refused."

Khrak: "Refused?"

Zouzab: "They said I was lying, but they were afraid. Afraid of toothy cows and vicious creatures."

Khrak: "I have a few vicious creatures of my own. We'll clear those woods just fine."

Zouzab: "Plumyums now?"

Khrak: "Lead me to the Igibys first and then I'll feed you plumyums till you pop."

Zouzab smiles wickedly.

Khrak: "Fangs! Assemble! Prepare to march!"

Oskar watches as something large walks towards Khrak, causing the ground to shake. He gasps.

. . .

The scene returns to Glipwood Forest where Tink climbs down from the treehouse grumpily and snatches his bow from the ground. Nia comes down on a makeshift elevator and stands beside Leeli and Nugget.

Janner: "Hey Tink! While you were snacking, the Toothy Cows were gobbling up everyone in Glipwood!"

Tink: "I'll still hit all the hounds before you do!"

Tink fires an arrow at a horned hound target.

Tink: "And call me Kalmar."

The boys draw their bows and continue training.

Podo: "'At's right, aim between the shoulders now."

Kalmar manages to hit one of the targets, but Janner misses his first shot.

Podo: "Don't rush it."

Podo glances back and amusedly notices Leeli leading Nugget.

Podo: "Huh."

Janner goes to grab more arrows from his quiver but finds it empty.

Janner: "Hmm?"

Kalmar playfully holds out an arrow to his brother.

Kalmar: "Missing something?"

Janner snatches the arrow from him.

Kalmar: "Hey!"

Kalmar chases after Janner and the boys begin wrestling. Podo isn't amused.

Podo: "Janner, yer to keep yer brother on task, not distract 'im more! Ye've let a horned hound get away!"

Janner: "It's not my fault! The King of Anniera stole my arrows!"

Nugget creeps towards one of the targets. Leeli clicks her tongue and Nugget pounces on the target.

Leeli: "Whoa!"

Podo chuckles.

Podo: "'At's one way to stop you two bickering! For true though, Leeli, you're to be hid away safe in the trees!"

Podo taps the sticks together.

Podo: "Toothy cow! Toothy cow! Take it serious, girl."

Leeli sighs.

Leeli: "Fine. I'll 'Flee to safety.' Again."

Leeli leads Nugget back to Nia.

Podo: "And play that whistleharp with all the fire in those little fingers! Somethin' spunky to inspire the lads in battle!"

Leeli continues to play her whistleharp in a faster tempo. She pauses as Artham jumps overhead with some rope.

Leeli: "What are you doing with that rope, Uncle Artham?"

Artham lands beside her.

Artham: "Laying traps, for nasty Fangs 'n wiggly thwaps!"

Leeli: "Can Nugget and I help you? In the drills, all I do is play my whistleharp and run away. I wish I had a bow like Kal and Janner."

Artham: "In your hands, that whistleharp is more powerful than ten bows, little song maiden."

Artham reaches into his pocket and takes out some fruit. He cuts it up with his claws and hands the slices to Leeli. She giggles and eats one of the slices.

Leeli: "Uncle Peet, what happened to your hands?"

Artham: "Uh-hm."

Artham begins panicking.

Artham: "Wouldn't sing. Couldn't sing. Song wrong! Wrong song!"

Podo: "Peet! Get moving! We're gonna want all those traps set afore dark!"

Artham comes to his senses and returns to setting the traps.

Leeli: "Do you know?"

Nia: "I don't. A few years ago he turned up in Glipwood. We thought he had died, but somehow he found us. I never saw him without the socks."

Leeli: "Why is grandpa mean to Uncle Peet?"

Nia: "Oh, he doesn't mean to be."

Podo: "TOOTHY COW STAMPEDE!"

Podo tugs at some ropes and pulls up several toothy cow targets, and the boys run around them and climb up some trees."

Nia: "When the Fangs sacked Anniera, Peet fought bravely to open a path for us to get to a boat. You were just a baby. A Fang even tried to rip you from my arms. That's how your leg was hurt."

Leeli touches her leg.

Nia: "While he was beating back that awful creature, your grandmother Wendolyn was cut down by an arrow. It isn't fair, but your grandpa just doesn't know what to do with his sadness, so it's turned to anger."

Leeli: "But it wasn't Uncle Artham's fault!"

Nia: "In time, I'm sure he'll make his peace. Your grandfather's a good man, but he's lived stories that he's never told."

Podo: "Tell me I don't still see three unperforated cows runnin' loose! Take 'em down, boys!"

Janner and Kalmar both fire their last arrows.

Nia: "There's a lot of pain in that big heart of his. A lot of goodness, too."

Disappointed, Kalmar draws his dagger.

Kalmar: "Hi-ya!"

He jumps down, breaking the head of one of the targets.

Kalmar: "Hi-ya! Ah!"

Janner: "Pembrick says those things can bite even when their heads are cut off. They can still kick, too."

Kalmar groans.

Janner: "Just saying."

Kalmar and Janner rejoin the others.

Leeli: "At least you knocked its head off."

Kalmar smiles.

Oskar: "TROLLS, TROLLS, TROLLS!"

Podo: "Huh?"

Oskar: "In the words of Ubinious the Whooned, 'Run Igibys! If you're out there, run!' They're coming."

Janner squints his eyes and spots Oskar riding on a gambloat towards them.

Janner: "Mr. Reteep?!"

The gambloat halts and Oskar flies forwards, landing face first into the ground. Janner helps him up.

Janner: "You're alive!"

Oskar: "Am I?"

Janner notices Oskar's bandage soaked with blood. Nia runs over.

Nia: "Can you stand?"

Oskar: "I severely doubt it."

Podo: "How much time do we have?"

Oskar: "Minutes."

Artham climbs to the top of his treehouse and notices a flock of birds fleeing as trees shake in the distance.

Nia: "Janner, get the First Well water."

Janner hands Nia the water, and she uncaps the bottle.

Oskar: "First Well water?! It's real?"

Nia pours a few droplets on Oskar's wound and it heals immediately.

Oskar: "Stupendous! Oh. Oooh. Might I, uh, have a few drops more?"

Podo: "Ye wouldn't want that, my friend."

Oskar: "Oh, but why not?"

Leeli: "You might get big."

Oskar sees Nugget for the first time and is surprised.

Oskar: "Is that Nugget? Gracious Grobblins!! The well water did THAT?!"

They all hear pounding in the distance and watch several animals run past.

Podo: "Time to get out of here! Fast."

Nia rushes to grab some backpacks. Podo hands Leeli a sack as Kalmar mounts Nugget behind her. Artham sets the last traps. Kalmar sheathes his dagger as Podo hands him his bow.

Podo: "Janner, keep your sword at the ready. Kalmar, shoot anything you're sure you can hit. And Leeli. Keep Nugget moving, no matter what. Let's go!"

Nugget barks and the family flee from the treehouse. Janner hurriedly tries to put on his backpack as he runs. Oskar runs beside Podo.

Oskar: "Splendiferous!"

Nia glances back as two Fangs appear in pursuit. She helps Janner with his backpack and nods at him.

Kalmar: "Uh. Ah. Woah!"

Kalmar barely dodges a branch.

Leeli: "Watch your head!"

Kalmar: "Thanks!"

Leeli whispers something to Nugget. Janner looks back at the Fangs.

Janner: "Kalmar!"

Podo: "Shoot!"

Kalmar draws his bow and nocks an arrow to the string, but he pauses as one of the Fangs is caught in a trap and thrown backwards. Artham swings through branches as more Fangs arrive. One Fang trips on a rope, and a net falls down, trapping it and two other Fangs. Kalmar shoots a few Fangs but pauses when he spots a Fang with three horned hounds. He tries to shoot one but he misses.

Kalmar: "Grandpa! They have horned hounds!"

Podo: "Everyone, keep moving!"

Kalmar fires another arrow, but it bounces off of the hound's armor. One of the hounds snaps at the children on Nugget's back.

Leeli: "Hang on!!"

Kalmar: "WOAH!"

Leeli clicks her tongue and Nugget pounces on one of the hounds. He bites it and tosses it away. Leeli clicks her tongue again as Kalmar fires a couple more arrows at the remaining hounds, and both hounds get hit. Janner, Nia, Podo and Oskar reach a gully and skid to a halt.

Janner: "Woah! Ah!"

Oskar: "Oh my!"

Nugget reaches them, and the family look to each other. Podo gestures for them to cross the gully, and he runs back to fight off the Fangs. Artham lands on one Fang and leaps back into the trees. Two Fangs observe their surroundings cautiously. Khrak walks up behind them and slaps them.

Khrak: "Keep moving you maggotloaves! Advance!"

The family descend into the gully and run across it. Midway, Nugget pauses and grows dizzy. Nia looks back.

Nia: "Help Nugget!"

Janner: "Huh? Hmph."

Janner runs back and pulls at Nugget's collar.

Leeli: "Janner, what's wrong with him?"

Janner: "I don't know. Hey Kal, give me a hand!"

Kalmar jumps down and helps Janner. Nugget groans.

Leeli: "That's it boy, take a step now."

Nugget sleepily steps forward. As the boys struggle to pull him, they hear a snap, and Kalmar looks down to see his foot in the mouth of a toothy cow.

Kalmar: "AAAAHHHHH!"

Podo: "Huh?"

Podo jumps down into the gully as Janner tries to help free Kalmar.

Janner: "NOO!"

Nia rushes to help them. Nugget comes to his senses and growls before pouncing on the cow. The ground collapses, and the children fall into a den. Podo jumps down after them and rushes to Janner's side as Nia attemptes to drag a log to one of the holes.

Nia: "Oskar, help me!"

Nugget is dizzy once more.

Leeli: "Wake up Nugget, please. It's alright. You need to wake up!"

Podo and Janner rush to Kalmar's side and discover that his foot is alright.

Kalmar: "It just slobbered on me!"

Podo and Janner sigh with relief but suddenly hear growling. Kalmar screams.

Podo: "Steady now."

Janner gasps as several groggy creatures surround them.

Podo: "Draw your swords slowly."

Podo and Janner draw their swords.

Janner: "I think it's the mist. I read something about this in Creaturepedia. Tink."

Kalmar gasps as a log lands into the den.

Nia: "Children, you need to climb out."

Podo: "Get Nugget and your sister out of here . . . NOW!"

Podo slashes at a horned hound and the boys quickly rush to lead Nugget to the log. Nugget climbs out and Kalmar follows after him. A toothy cow approaches Janner but is suddenly dragged backwards by an unseen creature into a dark tunnel, and crunching can be heard.

Janner: "Garg--gargan--ga . . . ga--gargan . . ."

Podo: "What? Speak up, boy!"

Podo punches a horned hound back, and the hound suffers the same fate as the toothy cow.

Janner: "Rock--roach . . . We're in a rockroach den!"

The gargan roackroach reveals itself and screams and lunges at Podo.

Podo: "RUN JANNER!!"

Artham arrives and jumps down into the den. He runs past Janner.

Artham: "Janner! Eyes up! Keep moving!"

Artham battles the rockroach and distracts it. Podo grabs Janner's arm.

Podo: "Move 'yer feet!"

Janner watches Artham battle the rockroach and runs to help him.

Janner: "Peet!"

Janner plunges his sword into one of the rockroach's legs and it screams in pain. The rockroach knocks him back and turns to face him.

Podo: "Get out of there, son!"

Janner: "Huh?"

Janner turns to watch as Artham leaps at the rockroach but is suddenly snatched by a large fist. And pulled from the den.

Artham: "Keep them safe!"

Froom: "Got him!"

Janner glances at Nugget and remembers the well water. He reaches back but is unable to grab it from his pack. He runs from the rockroach and quickly removes his backpack and manages to find the well water.

Janner: "Ah!"

He turns around and throws the bottle into the rockroach's mouth. The rockroach screams and retreats into a tunnel.

Janner: "Whoa."

Janner climbs out of the den and re-joins his family.

Podo: "What happened down there?"

Janner: "I had to throw the well water."

They gasp when they see the Fangs on the other side of the gully with Khrak at the front. Two trolls are with them, and Zouzab is sitting atop the shoulder of Froom who is carrying Artham.

Kalmar: "Zouzab?"

Kalmar draws his bow and aims it at the ridgerunner.

Khrak: "Lower your weapons! One word from me, and the Bird-man dies."

He snaps his fingers and Froom tightens his grip around Artham. Nia puts a hand on Kalmar's shoulder, and he lowers his bow.

Leeli: "You let him go right now!"

Khrak: "You're in no position to make demands. The only thing left to do is surrender. Where can you run that Gnag the Nameless will not find you? Hmm? You can't go home. Glipwood is destroyed because of you. Surrender now and we leave. Or run, and we'll burn all of Skree to the ground as we hunt you down. In the end, Gnag will not be denied."

Artham begins to groan.

Zouzab: "Ooh, the crazy sockman tries to say something! You won't have anything to say when the Fangs rule all and I'm swimming in an ocean of fruit!"

Khrak: "This is your last chance. Surrender, or the Bird-man dies."

The ground begins to quake and fruit falls from the trees into the gully. Zouzab licks his lips and jumps down. He picks up a plumyum, chuckling to himself. The ground shakes again and the rockroach, now much, much bigger, bursts from the ground. Zouzab screams as the rockroach appears to devour him. The rockroach screams at the Fangs and attacks them.

Khrak: "Forward, you fools! Get through the gully while it's eating someone else!"

Froom: "Big bug."

Khrak: "Not you! He's too valuable to us. Get him out of here!"

Froom: "Okay."

Janner watches as Froom flees with Artham.

Podo: "We need to move!"

The family escapes as Khrak glares after them.

. . .

The scene transitions to the family emerging from Glipwood Forest and reaching the River Blapp.

Nia: "Papa look. The River Blapp."

Oskar catches up to them.

Oskar: "To quote Dibilus Montanius, 'Taking a small rest might be nice.'"

The children sigh with relief, and each have a drink of water. Podo walks up to Janner.

Podo: "Ye did good back there, lad. You all kept your heads and I'm proud."

Janner: "Grandpa, we have to go back for Uncle Artham."

Nia: "Janner, I'm sorry. We can't do anything for him. We have to keep going."

Janner: "But--"

Podo: "Trust me, son, Artham Wingfeather's gotten himself out of worse scrapes than this."

Kalmar: "So where do we go now?"

Podo: "We'll duck and hide along the shore. Make our way west to Torrboro. Cross there to Dugtown, then lightout for the Ice Prairies."

Nia: "But every Fang in Torrboro will be looking for us, Papa. It's too dangerous."

Oskar: "There's a chance we might avoid Torrboro altogether."

Podo: "What are your talkin' about, Reteep?"

Oskar: "I once translated an ancient text that mentioned Miller's Bridge, carved by ancient Skreeans, spanning the Blapp at Fingap Falls where--"

Podo: "Fingap Falls?! Are ya mad? I'd rather take my chances with Gnag the Nameless than chase a fool's fairytale."

Janner: "But Grandpa, I remember seeing the bridge too on a map at Books and Crannies. It might be real. I mean . . . the First Well was real."

Podo: "No! If there's no bridge, we'll be trapped with our backs to the sea. Our only hope is west of here."

Nia: "Torrboro is too far. The Fangs will catch us before we get there."

Oskar: "What does the King of Anniera say on the matter?"

Kalmar gasps as the grown-ups turn to him.

Kalmar: "Me?! . . . I . . . uh. Uh . . . I . . . uh . . ."

Leeli dismounts Nugget and walks to Kalmar's side.

Leeli: "The Fangs are faster than we are. If we can sneak across the bridge, at least there's a chance."

Kalmar: "Uhhh, yeah, that's what I meant . . . What Leeli said. The Fingap thing."

Oskar: "Oh, the King has spoken."

Podo: "FINE! Fine. To the falls then. But there'd better be a bridge there, Reteep."

Kalmar helps Leeli remount Nugget.

Kalmar: "Thanks."

The camera transitions to the river and a montage shows the family walking alongside it. At one point, Kalmar is walking very close beside the water.

Janner: "Tink, get back from the water!"

Kalmar: "Why?"

Podo: "Listen to yer brother. Ye don't want to kiss a daggerfish."

Kalmar looks into the water and jumps back as a daggerfish attempts to impale him. He re-joins the others. and the montage continues. They reach the cliffs where they can see the Dark Sea.

Leeli: "Look!"

Nia: "Do you see a bridge?"

They suddenly hear the trolls coming.

Podo: "Go!"

The family run, and Janner glances at the mist of the falls.

Janner: "Woah!"

They halt when they reach the edge.

Oskar: "Where is it? It must be here."

Janner: "There's no bridge, is there?"

Nia: "Not anymore, son. If there ever was, it's gone."

The camera zooms out as the family stares into the mist.
