Escape to the North is the seventh episode of The Wingfeather Saga's second season. It premiered on May 17, 2024 for Angel Guild members and was temporarily streamed for everyone on August 16, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Janner sets his escape plan in motion, but discovers he may lose more than he can gain.
Plot[]
Janner approaches Mobrik and bribes him with the apples to do him a favor. At breakfast, Sara informs Janner that she was transferred to the carriage room and Janner tells her the next step of the plan is him going back in the box and in three days, they will be free. During his shift, Janner intentionally gets in trouble and thrown in the box.
When three days pass, Janner is once again taken to the Overseer's office where the Overseer scolds Janner and tells him his punishment will be working in the coal cellars. The Overseer gets ready to leave for Tilling Court while Mobrik escorts Janner away. When they are in the hallway, Janner seizes Mobrik and tells him that if he keeps quiet while he escapes, he can have the rest of his "apple stash." Mobrik however attempts to alert the Overseer and Janner is forced to tackle him and trap him in a barrel.
The Overseer approaches the hallway doors and Janner lunges into them, knocking the Overseer backwards and dislocating his ankle in the process. Janner steals his hat and mounts the carriage. Sara and the boy who helped Janner earlier raise the gates and Janner asks Sara to come with him. The Overseer begins limping toward the carriage and Mobrik appears and tries to force Sara to release the gate. Janner escapes and the carriage rolls over the Overseer's foot and Sara at last releases the gate.
He makes it to Tilling Street and runs into the house his family had been hiding at and he looks desperately for them. He goes down into the Strander burrows and finds a wounded Nurgabog who explains to him that his family were forced to leave without him and that they asked her to give him his travel gear if he comes to the burrow. When Nurgabog realizes Kalmar isn't with Janner, Janner tells her he had a dream of Kalmar in a cage and he says he has to go rescue him. Nurgabog gives Janner a letter from Nia before he goes.
Janner makes his way to the Strander camp and finds Maraly in one of the cages. She tells him that Kalmar was taken by the Black Carriage and she was locked in a cage as punishment for trying to save him. Janner lets her out, but the two of them are caught by Claxton. The children escape and hide in the branches of a tree and Janner tells Maraly he needs to get to the Ice Prairies. Maraly decides to go with him.
Artham wakes up in his cage and sees the Black Carriage arrive. Children exit from it and the Stone Keeper orders for them to be lined up. Artham notices one of the children is Kalmar and he screams.
In a post-credits scene, two shivering Green Fangs are at the Ice Prairies and a Grey Fang named Timber tells them to inform the Stone Keeper that his troops are heading into the Ice Prairies and the weather is fine.
