Synopsis[]

The cottage is ransacked while the kids are rescued by Peet and discover a fantastic hideout.

Summary[]

Searching the cottage[]

Podo and Nia return home to find the cottage had been ransacked and the kids nowhere to be found. Terrified, they call for the kids as they desperately search for them in the cottage. Nia hears barking in her closet, and she opens it to find Nugget. Podo guesses that the Fangs had something to do with the mess, and he tells Nia that the kids most likely went to Books and Crannies. Nugget suddenly runs towards the door and stares at the forest. Knowing that Nugget has found something, Podo decides to follow him while Nia heads to Oskar's. Podo assures Nia that they'll find the children, and the three of them depart.

Escaping from Anklejelly[]

Still stuck inside the weapons room, the kids are holding the door shut as the horned hounds continue to attempt to break it open. They suddenly hear moaning, and the candles all go out. On the other side of the door, they can hear someone fighting the hounds. Tink relights one of the candles and the children then hear Peet knocking on the door and asking for them to open it. When Janner opens it, Peet tells the children that they have to leave. Janner asks if they should bring some of the weapons, and when he shows Peet the sword with "Esben Wingfeather" written on it, Peet starts screaming and freaking out. Leeli comforts him and calms him down. When they hear more horned hounds, Peet says to himself that he'll protect the children, and he tells Janner that the weapons must stay.

Meanwhile, Podo follows Nugget into Glipwood forest, and he wonders why the kids went into the forest if they weren't being chased by Fangs.

Meeting with Oskar[]

Nia arrives at Books and Crannies and finds Oskar. She asks him if the kids had come to Books and Crannies and she explains to him that the Fangs had ransacked their home. Oskar asks if she has checked the jail, and she tells him that she already did. Oskar then asks if the kids know about Anklejelly Manor. Nia tells him that the kids might've heard stories, but she has never told them about it. Oskar explains to her how he had a map and a poster stashed away that Tink might've found the same day he got a belly itch, and he shows her a spare map and poster that he had. Nia tells Oskar to grab his hat, and the two of them set out for Anklejelly Manor.

Back at Anklejelly Manor, Peet is leading the kids to the forest. As they make their way there, two horned hounds appear and growl at them. Peet tries to scare them off by screaming at them, but his scream only hurts the hounds' ears. Peet and the children run into the forest with the hounds chasing after them. They stop at some vines and Peet tells them to grab on. The kids obey and Peet then tugs at the vines, and the kids are sent up into the trees. As they go up, Leeli accidentally drops her crutch, and Peet grabs it and whacks the hounds before grabbing onto a vine himself and going up into the branches.

Fang fight[]

Over at the courthouse, the Fangs are laughing and drinking while Slarb sneakily heads into Gnorm's office and snatches his whistler. He gets caught by Vop, who asks him what he is doing with the whistler. Slarb tells him it is a special mission, which Vop laughs at. Greasle mocks Slarb and he punches her, which provokes Vop to attack Slarb. The fight eventually results in Slarb killing Vop. All of the other Fangs are both shocked and angry and they all try to grab Slarb, but Slarb slips through their fingers and escapes through the front door. As he tries to get away, he is grabbed by Gnorm. The other Fangs come out of the building and inform him that Slarb killed Vop. Gnorm slams Slarb into the wall and demands an explanation. He then realises that Slarb also had his whistler, which makes Gnorm angrier. Slarb begins telling Gnorm that the Igibys had jewels and he shows him the jewels he found. Gnorm takes the jewels and drops Slarb, who instantly flees, and Gnorm orders the other Fangs to catch Slarb as he admires the jewels.

Bridges in the Trees[]

As the hounds bark at the Igiby children, Tink asks how they're going to get down, and Peet tells him that they aren't going down, but across. Janner asks him if he expects them to some how walk across the trees, and Peet asks him if he can fly. When Janner says no, Peet is disappointed and says yes, they have to walk. Leeli assures Janner that she can crawl, and the children make their way across a branch. To their amazement, they find a bridge in the trees. They climb down onto the bridge and follow Peet, who doesn't seem to want them to follow him. Peet tells them to go home, but Janner points out that they don't know where they are. Peet gives them hard-to-follow directions, and he walks off, so Leeli says that it is probably best that they just follow Peet. As they follow him, they ask him questions, but Peet doesn't want to answer them, and he runs off crying, so the children continue following him silently.

At the town hall, Gnorm is eating some maggotloaf as he tells Mayor Blaggus to read out a note. When the mayor finishes reading out the note, he gives it to Gnorm, who places the note in a small canister strapped to a crow and places one of the Annieran jewels into the crow's beak. He orders the crow to deliver the note and the jewel to General Khrak, and he throws the crow at the window, accidentally knocking the crow out due to the window being boarded up, and he asks for another crow.

Peet's castle[]

Back at the forest, the children follow Peet to a treehouse, which they stare at in amazement. They go inside, and Tink begins rummaging through the place, which Peet gets annoyed by. Leeli tells Peet that she's glad she got to see his treehouse, and he tells her that it is his castle. Tink then asks if there is any food, because he is starving, and Peet quickly grabs a pile of leaves and gives some of them to Tink, who asks Peet if he just eats dried leaves, and he proceeds to eat one. Janner asks Peet if "Peet" is his real name, and Peet responds asking what Janner's real name is. He tells him that his name is "Janner Igiby", but Peet asks him if it really is his name. Janner then tells Peet that he just wants to know if he's the Florid Sword, and Peet laughs and says no. Janner explains to Peet that the Fangs had taken Sara and he asks Peet if he knows any Fang-fighters who can help them rescue Sara, but Peet tells him that no one comes back, and even people who escape don't come back entirely. Dismayed, Janner tells Tink and Leeli that they better go, because Peet can't help them. Before they leave, Tink finds a book with "Artham Wingfeather" written in it, and he asks who Artham Wingfeather is. Peet suddenly screams and rips out some of the pages from the book and eats it. He begins screaming at the kids and telling them to leave. As the kids run off, they hear Peet screaming hysterically.

Searching for the children[]

Nia and Oskar arrive at Anklejelly Manor and they search for the kids. When they do not find the kids, Nia decides to search the basement. They head into the storage room and find a lighter that belongs to Tink. On the table in the middle of the room, Nia sees the sword with "Esben Wingfeather" written on it and examines it. Oskar sympathetically places his hand on Nia's shoulder as Nia tells him that the kids will have so many questions now. She then prays to the Maker to keep the children safe. Oskar tells her that if the kids made it to Anklejelly Manor, they most likely would've gone back home by now, so Nia decides to head back home too. She puts the sword back in its sheath and onto the table where she found it. Before Nia and Oskar leave, Nia finds a couple of socks on the floor, and realises that Peet had come too. Oskar begins quoting an obscure author, but Nia leaves the room before he can say the author's name.

At Torrboro, the crow sent by Gnorm arrives at the Palace Torr and lands at General Khrak's throne. Taking the jewel in its mouth and the note, Khrak reads it and then calls Gnorm a fool for letting a family in possession of Annieran jewels to still walk free. He sends the crow off and calls for his scribe. When the scribe arrives, he tells the scribe to write a message to Gnorm. He orders Gnorm to arrest the the family by dawn or he will ride into Glipwood and personally draw and quarter him.

Back at Glipwood, Nia drops Oskar off near town and tells him to be ready in case she and her family need his help. Oskar tells her to try not to fret and that the kids are probably already at home. Nia nods and heads back to the Igiby Cottage.

Finding the children[]

In the forest, the children walk across the bridges in the trees as they try to find their way back home. As they make their way across the bridges, they suddenly hear some rustling in the bushes below. They expect to see one of the many scary creatures of the forest, but instead they see Nugget. Leeli calls for Nugget and waves to him as Podo comes out of the bushes behind Nugget. When Podo spots the children up on the bridge, he asks what they are doing up there, unaware that a quill diggle was walking towards him. The kids try to warn him about the quill diggle, but Podo struggles to understand them as they all try to talk at once. When he hears the quill diggle behind him, he turns around as the creature prepares to shoot some of its quills at him. Right before it shoots him, however, Peet throws some fruit at the quill diggle, and the creature walks away. The kids ask Peet if he was following them, but before he can answer, Podo tells him to get away from his grandkids. The kids explain that Peet helped them up onto the trees, and Podo demands that he better help them down. Peet tells the kids that there is a ladder under the bridge that they can climb down. Tink climbs down first as Janner tries to figure out how they'll get Leeli down. Peet offers to carry Leeli down, and Leeli hops onto his back as Janner climbs down. When Peet reaches the bottom of the ladder, Podo tells him to let go of Leeli and he'll catch her, but Peet instead just jumps down. Leeli climbs off of Peet's back, runs to Nugget and gives her dog a hug. Janner tries to apologise to Podo, but Podo instead walks up to Peet and shoves him so hard, knocking him to the ground. The kids are shocked at this and Leeli reminds Podo that Peet saved him from the quill diggle, but Podo just picks up Leeli and says that it's a little late for Peet to decide to start saving people now. Podo tells the kids never to speak to Peet again, and he then tells Janner that he is in a lot of trouble for putting his siblings in danger as well as scaring their mother half to death.

New fugitives[]

As Ferinia locks up her shop, she overhears Gnorm calling a meeting. She walks over and hears Gnorm tell the Fangs that they are to arrest the Igibys on sight. When the meeting ends, Ferinia runs off to tell Oskar.

As Podo and the kids head back home, Janner stops in his tracks and asks Podo who is Esben Wingfeather. Podo stops walking and asks Janner where he learned the name, but Janner just repeats his question. Podo struggles to find the right answer and just says that Esben was their father, and before he can say anymore, he hears something and they all run towards the Igiby Cottage to find the barn on fire and several Fangs burning their furniture outside their house. Oskar suddenly arrives and tells the family that Gnorm gave orders to have the family arrested on sight. Leeli sees Nia brought outside with her hands bound. Leeli cries out for her, and when Podo sees his daughter in trouble, he puts Leeli down and tells Oskar to take the children to "you-know-where" as he heads towards the cottage. The children and Oskar watch as Podo starts fighting the Fangs. Nia tries to plead with her father to just run away, but Podo doesn't listen and he continues to fight the Fangs. When Tink says that he's going to fight the Fangs too, Oskar stops him, telling him that half the fight is picking the right time to fight and that now is not that time. He picks up Leeli and leads Janner and Tink away from the cottage. Leeli watches the Fangs overpower Podo, and she cries as Oskar takes her and the boys to safety.
