Bonifer Squoon (BON-ih-fur SKWOON[1]) was the chief advisor of the High Kings of Anniera for three generations, starting with Madia Wingfeather and ending with Esben Wingfeather, whom he betrayed to let the Fangs of Dang into the Shining Isle of Anniera and conquer Anniera for Gnag the Nameless.

History[]

Pre-Great War[]

Bonifer came from the Green Hollows and loved books. When Madia came to visit, Bonifer fell in love with her. His friend Ortham also loved her. Madia chose to marry Ortham and Bonifer became jealous. He still loved Madia, and when the couple invited him to be their chief advisor he gladly accepted so that he could be near her and her children, whom he would come to think of as his own. He got a message from a mysterious person in the mountains asking for animals to be sent in exchange for a lot of gold. Bonifer was a bit disturbed, but he could not resist the money and he sent the animals by way of men from the Woes of Shreve. The King's first child, a girl, was born. Bonifer kept feeding on his hate, and the man in the mountains asked for him to send a human child. At first he was horrified at the thought. Then Madia became pregnant again and bore twins; the eldest was sickly and weak, and would always be lame. The nurse gave one look and him and handed him to Bonifer. The second child was healthy. Bonifer took the lame child, whom Madia never had a chance to name, and hid him, and threatened the nurse never to tell anyone. They told Ortham the oldest was weak and had died as soon as he was born, and Bonifer asked if he could be the one to bury it without Ortham or Madia seeing the body. He also asked that the people not know there had been another. Ortham trusted Bonifer completely, and although he thought it odd he should not see the body, he granted these requests. Bonifer hired a wet nurse, Murgah, and took the child and the two nurses up into the mountains to the castle of the man whom he had been in touch with, the Castle Throg. On the way he pushed the old nurse off a cliff so that she would tell no tales, and threatened Murgah harshly. He grew to love the child, whom he thought of as his own by rights, and told him that Madia did not love him and had thrown him away and that Bonifer had saved him. But he came down the mountain to be advisor to Ortham and Madia.

Great War[]

To get the Jewels of Anniera for Gnag the Nameless, he let the Fangs into Anniera, betraying Esben Wingfeather, the High King, and Nia Wingfeather, his wife.

Wingfeather War[]

Bonifer learned where the Jewels were, and opened the Watercraw to let the Fangs into the Green Hollows. He was thought to have died, but then he appeared near the end of TWatWK.

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness[]

The Igiby boys discovered one of his journals in a crate from Dang at Books and Crannies. He was known to travel often on what he called "Tours of goodwill," leaving Anniera for months at a time. In the book's opening, it is known to have said "This is the Journal of Bonifer Squoon, Chief Advisor to the High King of Anniera, Keeper of the Isle of Light. Read this without my permission and I will pound your nose." In TMitH, Podo Helmer explains Squoon was much the type to tell you he'd pound your nose, yet too cowardly to ever do so.

The Monster in the Hollows[]

Bonifer pretended to be a friend to the Wingfeathers, and helped Oskar translate the First Book from Old Hollish, but betrays them near the end of the book.

The Warden and the Wolf King[]

Bonifer reveals that he was the one who let the Fangs into Anniera, and that he knew Gnag the Nameless. He was thought to be drowned, but Bonifer later melded himself with a spider and tried to eat Kalmar and Janner in Castle Throg. He was killed by trolls soon after.
