Synopsis[]
Freed from lockdown, the Igiby kids play a game of Zibzy and discover a secret map.
Summary[]
Prepare to march[]
A murder of carrier crows flies to Glipwood with one of the crows carrying a message. Three crows land at the windowsill of a ruined building where Commander Gnorm is eating maggotloaf. When he notices the crows, he grabs the one with the message and reads it. The message says "Prepare to march." Gnorm sends the crows away as he says that he and the Fangs of Glipwood will be ready.
Three Honoured And Great Subjects[]
At the Igiby Cottage, the Igiby children are doing their T.H.A.G.S.. As they do their work, Tink asks Nia why they have to do T.H.A.G.S., then Nia tells him that they don't have to, they get to. She then explains that their father would've wanted them to do their T.H.A.G.S. Leeli begins playing Yurgen's Tune with her whistleharp, and as she plays, a strange wind blows the children's hair, and Tink sees Yurgen swimming in the ocean in a vision. Nia and Podo look on, confused. When Leeli finishes playing, Janner asks Nia how Holoré is spelt. Nia asks him where he heard the word, which Leeli says that it was in the song she sang with the sea dragons. Tink accuses Leeli of making the word up, but Janner tells him that he heard the dragons speak it. Tink asks Podo if dragons even sing real words, which Podo answers that he never yet met one that did. Tink then asks if dragons eat Fangs, and Podo explains to him that dragons plague the sea while Fangs plague the land and neither troubles the other.
The children chase each other throughout the house, unintentionally bothering Podo as they play, such as knocking him over as he tries to seal some cracks in the wall, and bumping into him as he tries to carve an image onto a wood block. He pleads with Nia to let them out of the house, but Nia is worried that it still isn't safe for them to go. Podo tells her that he's taking the children with him when he goes into town the next day so that they can at least play a game of zibzy with their friends. Nia reluctantly agrees, and the children are thrilled to finally get out of the house.
Gnorm's speech[]
The Fangs are all gathered outside a building as Commander Gnorm comes outside. He calls the Fangs a "pitiful lot" and tells them that Fangs are "fearsome" and "loathsome", which the Glipwood Fangs are not, and that he might have to move up their re-Fangings. Vop laughs and says that Slarb would need two re-Fangings. The rest of the Fangs laugh as Gnorm remarks how Slarb was humiliated by the Igiby children and their dog. Slarb claims that the children never thrashed him and that a rock hit him in the head. He then says that it might've been the Florid Sword, which makes all the other Fangs grow wary. Gnorm sarcastically asks Slarb if the Florid Sword had come all the way from Dugtown just to conk the Fang's noggin. Gnorm then explains to the Fangs that they have orders to be ready to march, which usually ends up in fighting, and fighting is what gets Fangs promoted. He notes that if they impress General Khrak, their next assignment will be in Torrboro, a place that is practically swimming in maggotloaf. The Fangs all cheer at this, but are then silenced by Gnorm, who tells them to prepare their gear, sharpen their spears, and to kiss their ugly mamas goodbye. The Fangs laugh as they leave. Slarb asks Brak what's so funny, and Brak tells him that "Fangs ain't got no mamas!". Slarb begins walking away, but Gnorm stops him and tells him that he has been assigned to Carriage duty. Ferinia, having watched the entire meeting, runs off with a nervous look on her face.
A game of zibzy[]
The Igiby children meet their friends at a field. Their friend Bunce suggests that they should start the game of zibzy, but Rand Blaggus tells him that they can't start without Sara Cobbler. Bunce disagrees and says that he can pick who he wants on his team and that Sara can have the leftovers. Sara suddenly arrives on the back of a gambloat and asks if Bunce wasn't going to pick teams without her as she tosses a ball to him. Bunce asks her if she made the ball, which Sara explains that she did and that it took her two weeks to get it perfectly stuffed. Janner says that the ball is amazing, and when Sara thanks him, he awkwardly thanks her back. Bunce asks how many games blocks are they going to play, and Sara suggests that they play ten game blocks and that the losers have to eat a bowl of glowing Boggle-worms. Bunce agrees and begins picking teams. He picks Tink first, and Sara picks Leeli, which surprises Leeli because she has never played zibzy but only watched it being played. Sara points out that since Leeli has watched it her entire life, she knows every rule in the game which will help her team win.
Podo visits Ferinia's Flower Shop and asks Ferinia for the "Torrboro Special". Ferinia nods and shows him a book.
Back at the zibzy game, Sara whacks the ball towards Bunce's team's goal, but Tink quickly does a "dragon strike" by tossing his broom at the ball and throwing it off course. The broom hits Jebb Blaggus and "Bomnubbles" him, which means he has to stay frozen for a certain period of time. When the ball lands, Leeli whacks it to Sara, who whacks it again and scores three points. Bunce calls his team over and tells them what to do.
Back at the flower shop, Ferinia tells Podo she thinks that something is brewing with the Fangs and that she heard about how his grandchildren got into a tussle at the Dragon Day festival. Podo explains that the kids were alright. Ferinia tells him that Gnorm has his family marked for protection thanks to Nia's Maggotloaf, and that Slarb was reassigned to Carriage duty.
Peet the Sock Man[]
During the zibzy game, Tink hops on the back of a Gambloat and snatches the ball. He inadvertently almost crushes Jebb, who is forced to break his freeze and jump out of the way as Tink turns around and throws the ball at Sara's team's goal. The ball misses and goes flying into the forest. Tink cheers, believing that he earned three points for his team and helped them win the first game-block, but Leeli points out that Jebb broke his freeze, which meant that Sara's team won the first game-block. Bunce is disappointed with Tink, not just for losing the first game-block, but also for losing Sara's new ball. Janner says that he'll go get it, but he is stopped by Leeli, who reminds him that Glipwood Forest are dangerous. Janner tells her that it's different if he is helping someone. As he enters the woods, he encounters a couple of creatures before finding the ball. When he picks it up, he hears someone behind him. When he turns around, he realizes it's just Peet the Sock Man, who quickly takes the ball from Janner and throws it at a Thwapperfly that was attempting to attack the two of them. When the Thwapperfly flies off, Peet picks up the ball and skips cheerfully out of the woods and over to the rest of the children with Janner following him. The kids say hello to Peet as Podo arrives and calls for Janner, Tink and Leeli, all the while glaring at Peet. The Igibys say goodbye to their friends and Peet watches the children with sadness on his face.
Having returned to the Igiby Cottage, Podo explains to the family that Slarb will no longer trouble them now that the Fang has been reassigned to Black Carriage duty. Janner asks if that means he can go to Books 'N' Crannies to help Oskar N. Reteep with unloading a new shipment of books. Nia says alright, but he has to stay clear of the Fangs and he has to take Tink and Leeli with him. Podo lets Nia know that he and Leeli have some business of their own they need to attend to, so Leeli will be with him for the day.
A shipment in Dugtown[]
In the middle of the night, a wagon, driven by Oskar pulls up outside a building in Dugtown. Gammon exits the building and asks Oskar if the wagon is for another shipment. Oskar opens the back of the wagon as a woman and two more men exit the building carrying bundles containing weapons. They load the weapons into the wagon. A sword slips out of one of the bundles, and the Florid Sword quickly grabs the sword before it can clatter to the ground. The Florid Sword asks Oskar if the weapons will be going to Anklejelly Manor, to which Oskar answers, "yes". The Florid Sword grins at this and places the sword into the wagon.
The Janner and Tink make their way to Books and Crannies. When they arrive, Joe Shooster, who is running a stall in the streets, tosses some fruit to Tink as the boys go inside. Tink holds out the fruit and sees Zouzab's reflection behind him. He throws the fruit in the air and Zouzab quickly grabs it and devours it. Janner asks Zouzab where Oskar is, and Zouzab tells him that Oskar is out back. Janner finds Oskar unloading a couple of crates of books, and he quickly takes one of them from Oskar, who thanks him and asks Janner if he could unload the books for him and he'll sort them later. As Janner does so, he asks Oskar where he gets all the books, and Oskar explains that he gets them from all over Skree. Janner tells him how he wishes he could go on adventures searching for books. Oskar says that one thing he's learned in his travels is that some of the best journeys happen at home. As Janner continues unloading the books, he finds a book about Anniera. Oskar quickly snatches the book away from Janner and tells him that it is nothing.
Buzzard Willie's Farm[]
Podo, Leeli and Nugget head to Buzzard Willie's farm, with Podo carrying a sack full of thwaps. When Leeli asks Podo what they're doing, Podo tells her that he is dumping the Thwaps where they can't steal from their farm anymore. Leeli wonders why they're dumping them at Buzzard Willie's farm, so Podo explains to her that fifty years ago, he and Willie were friends, but they were in love with the same girl, who was called Merna Bidgeholler. Willie stole Merna's heart before Podo had the chance to woo her, and since then, the two of them have been pranking each other. Leeli decides to help Podo and opens the sack for him, releasing the thwaps into Buzzard Willie's farm. The two quickly hide as Willie comes outside and sees the Thwaps stealing from his farm.
A secret map[]
Back at Books 'N' Crannies, Janner is sorting books while Tink and Zouzab race each other. As Tink runs by, he tries to turn, but he slips and crashes into a shelf, knocking a bunch of books onto the floor. Janner walks over, unamused, and asks Tink if he is alright. Tink tells him he is fine and is about to put the books back when he notices a small hidden compartment had been opened up. Inside the compartment is a parchment. Tink looks at it and discovers that it is a map. Janner asks him what he found and wonders where the map leads. Tink says that it could lead to treasure or Fang-fighters. Janner tells him to put it back, but Zouzab suddenly arrives and asks the boys what they were talking about. Tink hides the map in his sleeve and grabs a book called "The Art of Itching". When Zouzab is confused, Tink grabs some fruit from his pocket and shows it to Zouzab, who demands that Tink give him the fruit. Tink throws the fruit away, and Zouzab runs after it. Oskar suddenly appears behind the boys and notices that they're hiding something, but when he sees Tink holding "The Art of Itching", he thinks that the boy has a rash and is too embarrassed to admit it, so he tells him that his secret is safe with him.
At the Igiby Cottage, Podo gives Leeli a new crutch that he made for her. Leeli giggles when she sees "Lizard Kicker" written on it. Podo explains to her that a sailor earns her sea-name by her brave deeds and that Leeli earned the name "Lizard Kicker" when she fought Slarb, which Nia says that she is proud of her for that, but she hopes that it is just the once. As the family sat down at the table, Janner teasingly asked Tink how's his itch going. When Podo asked about the itch, Tink explained that Oskar thought that he had a rash. Podo began to tell him what he could do if the rash was reddish-green, but he was silenced by Nia who told him that that was not appropriate talk for the table. Tink then said angrily that he doesn't have a rash, but as he did so, the map slightly slipped out of his sleeve, which Janner notices, before Tink quickly pushes the map back up his sleeve.
At night, when everyone was in bed, Janner angrily tells Tink that he said to put the map back, which Tink explains to him that he couldn't because of Zouzab and Oskar. He then pleads with Janner if they could at least look at the map while they have it. Janner reluctantly agrees and the two boys study the map. They see an X where Anklejelly Manor, which Tink says that he heard of Anklejelly Manor and how it is haunted by the ghost of Brimney Stupe, but Janner says that that is just a story. As the boys wonder why Oskar had the map, they hear Podo downstairs, who is asking if they're asleep yet. The boys reply to him that they're almost asleep, and Podo tells them lights out.
The Stonekeeper[]
At Torrboro, a boat carrying Amrah the Stonekeeper and several Fangs arrives at the docks. Waiting for them at the docks is the Black Carriage. The Carriage takes them to Palace Torr, where General Khrak sits upon a throne. As Amrah enters the building, Khrak gets up from his chair and watches and kneels as Amrah approaches him. Amrah tells him to rise, and she then asks all the Fangs present if they would sing The Song of the Ancient Stones and the Fangs respond "We wish the power to be our own!" Amrah then says "Then let it bend both shape and form." and the Fangs reply with "And make us fierce as fire and storm!" Amrah sits down on the throne and tells Khrak that Gnag the Nameless no longer believes that the Jewels of Anniera are in Skree and that he means to march West beyond the edges of the map. Khrak asks Amrah why Gnag continues to seek the Jewels, and Amrah asks Khrak if he is questioning the wisdom of Gnag the Nameless. She then explains to him how the Jewels hold an ancient power that makes many things possible. Amrah then tells Khrak that the Black Carriage must now travel nightly. Khrak shouts "for Gnag!" and all of the other Fangs chant Gnag's name.
