A Crow for the Carriage is the eleventh chapter of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness.
Summary[]
The Fangs seize Tink and Leeli. One of the Fangs asks Slarb what they should do with the children, and Janner looks to the crowd, hoping that Podo or Nia were in the crowd. Slarb says that Commander Gnorm had ordered for the children to be brought to him. Janner notices that Nugget is gone, and just before they leave, Slarb punches Janner in the side of his head, pulls Leeli's hair, and kicks Tink in the stomach as well as scarring the boy's cheek with his knife and slamming the pommel onto his head.
The Fangs take the children to the town jail where Gnorm is waiting on the front porch, and he tells the Fangs to take the children inside, and the children are thrown into a cell. Leeli begins to cry, and she apologises for getting them in trouble, explaining that she was only trying to save Nugget when he ran off. She tells them that she kicked Slarb, which both boys are impressed by. Tink tries to make Leeli feel better by telling her that it was Nugget's fault and not hers, but that only upsets Leeli more.
Slarb and Gnorm enter the room, and Gnorm is disappointed in Slarb for losing in a fight against three children. He asks Slarb what would be the best punishment for the children, and Slarb suggests that he tortures them with whips, but Gnorm dismisses that and decides to send the children to Dang, telling Slarb to "Send a crow for the Carriage."
