Summary[]
The film begins with several children reciting a nursery rhyme about the Black Carriage. In the middle of the night, Janner Igiby lays awake. He hears the Black Carriage passing by his house, and he hides under his covers as the Carriage stops at a nearby house. Two Fangs enter the house and screaming is heard. A recap begins that explains that an evil being known as "Gnag the Nameless" had long ago attacked the Shining Isle of Anniera and sought the Jewels of Anniera. Not finding them, he invaded Skree, and for nine long years the Skreeans have lived under the reign of the Fangs of Dang as Gnag continues his search for the Jewels.
Kalmar Igiby is shown on the roof of the Igiby Cottage replacing the roof tiles. Inside the cottage, Nia Igiby is making breakfast with the help of her daughter, Leeli Igiby. After hearing a crash from the roof, Nia goes outside to check on Kalmar and to tell him to hurry up because breakfast was almost ready. Kalmar, excited for breakfast, jumps down from the roof as Nia returns inside. Meanwhile, Janner Igiby is collecting sheaves of wheat and loading them up into a wagon. He stops for a moment and stares out at the Dark Sea of Darkness. He takes a piece of paper out of his pocket with a sketch of his father sailing on a ship on his twelfth birthday. Nia calls Janner over for breakfast, and Janner runs back to the Cottage.
Nia, wondering where her father Podo is, asks Kalmar if he saw him. A thwap suddenly slams into the window, and Podo grabs it and tosses it into a sack before coming inside. Leeli asks him what he is going to do with the thwaps, and Podo tells her that he will throw them into the Dark Sea. Leeli begs him not to, and Podo reassures her that he'll instead let the thwaps loose in Buzzard Willie's garden. The family sit around the table and thank the Maker before eating. As they eat breakfast, Nia mentions that Janner was up early, and Janner explains that he couldn't sleep. Janner reminds Podo that he said he could go to Books and Crannies on his own if he finished his chores before breakfast, and Podo says yes.
Janner and Podo are on the porch of the cottage. Podo tells him to return the farm tool to the Fangs, then gives him the permission form in case they give him any trouble. Kalmar and Leeli walk out of the cottage, and Janner seems annoyed that his siblings are coming with him. Podo assures Janner that his siblings will be "the wind in your sails, not the anchor holding you back." Nia tells Janner that the town will be bustling getting ready for the Dragon Day Festival. Kalmar and Leeli get excited at the mention of the sea dragons. An explanation of what sea dragons are plays, then the children walk away from the Igiby Cottage to Glipwood Township.
